"EVERY SINGLE SEPARATED KID HAS BEEN TERRIFIED. We're [seen as] the enemy." — HHS OIG ()

1/ This Awful Thread begins May 2019.

By design, EVERY President* Trump immigration and border policy has one point: CRUELTY.

We begin with #TrumpConcentrationCamps.
2/ May 2019:

Huge soft-sided structures — tents erected in the Texas desert at El Paso and Donna Border Stations — cost U.S. taxpayers $37 MILLION to house 500 people PER TENT.

The United States Concentration Camp System is officially open for business!

3/ May 1, 2019:

In two locations along our Southern Border, CBP is so convinced that immigrants use children to smuggle ADULTS in, they test DNA of all families that “don't seem right” to them.

Any family that refuses... LOSES CUSTODY OF THEIR CHILDREN.

4/ May 1, 2019:

HHS awards a NO-BID contract of ~$340 MILLION to CHS — the profiteering company running Homestead Child Prison.

Former Chief of Staff* and DHS Secretary* John Kelly lobbied for Caliburn — which owns CHS — before joining the White House.

5/ May 2, 2019:

Border Patrol Agents will be trained to give Credible Fear Interviews.

Being arresting officer, prosecutor, judge, AND jury WILL reduce how many refugees pass their CFI — thereby preventing them from the next step in our asylum process.

6/ May 3, 2019:

John Kelly magically lands on the Board of Directors for Caliburn, the profiteering company managing the Homestead Concentration Camp for Kids.

Thanks to his influence with Individual-1’s swamp, JK will profit handsomely.

#ThreadofAwful

7/ May 3, 2019:

USCIS Director* Cissna begins adjusting the civics test that immigrants must take to become citizens.

His “corrections” place heavier emphasis on English proficiency, even though English is neither our national nor our official language.

uscis.gov/sites/default/…
8/ May 7, 2019:

The Ninth Circuit decides that returning asylum seekers to Mexico while they await adjudication — the misnamed #MigrantProtectionProtocols — can continue unabated while they decide if MPPs are lawful.

Trump's minions crank MPPs up to 11.

9/ May 7, 2019:

President* Trump tackles the problem of visa overstays of “undocumented immigrants” living in the USA.

Stephen Miller’s “solution” focuses efforts on targeting African, Latinx, and Asian immigrants — not on Canadian & European overstays.

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
10/ May 7, 2019:

ICE and GEO — a private prison profiteering company — are “working in cahoots” to prevent women immigrants from receiving free legal representation.

We know because of a complaint filed by advocacy group @RAICESTEXAS...

#ThreadOfAwful

11/ May 10, 2019 — New in the USCIS policy manual:

“Certain victim-based applications” for U.S. visas will now require changes of address to be made IN PERSON.

No other visa applications are required in person; we can send forms via Internet or mail.

uscis.gov/sites/default/…
12/ May 10, 2019:

A HUD policy change targeting undocumented immigrants living in subsidized housing will impact “mixed” American families, too.

55,000 children — citizens and legal residents — can be rendered homeless as a consequence.

#ThreadOfAwful

13/ May 10, 2019:

USCIS issues new guidance on Credible Fear Interviews, eliminating ANY consideration of trauma and cultural background in assessments.

Interviewers now look for fraud and duplicity first, effectively seeking ANY excuse to deny asylum.

14/ May 13, 2019:

A Presidential* “proclamation” says that anyone who comes here BETWEEN Ports of Entry will be denied asylum, despite US law to the contrary.

It is likely Border Patrol’s “metering” policy caused a spike in these unauthorized crossings.

16/ May 15, 2019:

President* Trump orders the U.S. military to erect 6 more concentration camps to cage 7500 more refugees along the U.S.-Mexican border.

Active duty soldiers need to be careful not to run afoul of Posse Comitatus... and moral turpitude.

17/ May 15, 2019:

President* Trump plans a civics test for legal entrants to the U.S.

Not for the eventual CITIZENSHIP application — such a test already exists! — but just to become a legal RESIDENT, before even entering the USA.

18/ May 15, 2019:

President* Trump’s State Department shuts down ALL flights between Venezuela and the USA, trapping refugees.

The Trump Doctrine is that we do not help people trying to escape chaos and violence.

DHS waives “certain laws, regulations” so construction of barriers and roads near the border in Imperial County, Tacate and Telexico, CA — plus Cochise and Pima Counties, AZ — can begin.

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
20/ May 16, 2019:

President* Trump plans to move hundreds of undocumented immigrants into Broward County, Florida, blindsiding community leaders and even the Governor. They are mightily displeased.

Two days later, Trump changes his mind.

#ThreadOfAwful

21/ May 16, 2019:

President* Trump’s “grand immigration plan” substantially reduces legal immigration from most nations, killing our diversity visa lottery.

Individual-1's vision is to end what makes America great: Our success as a nation of immigrants.

22/ May 17, 2019: DHS and Mexico’s government…

🔹 Traded info about journalists, lawyers, and activists who crossed the southern border;

🔹 Flagged their passports;

🔹 Hauled them aside for secondary inspections;

🔹 Perused their phones and laptops.

23/ May 17, 2019:

The States of Texas, NJ, NY, and Massachusetts are required to work with DHS-USCIS to “match up computers” to make sure that nobody who is undocumented is receiving unemployment benefits...

Even if they WERE employed and then laid off.

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
24/ May 17, 2019:

California is required to do a “computer match up” between its Health Dept data and DHS-USCIS data.

To make sure no one is getting Medicaid from the federal government while undocumented.

When did such surveillance become acceptable?

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
25/ May 20, 2019:

Those additional beds cost U.S. taxpayers an extra $1.4 BILLION PER YEAR.

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
28/ May 23, 2019:

President* Trump’s CBP begins flying immigrants from our Texas border to holding cells in California.

135 people at a time, 3 times a week.

INSTEAD OF PUTTING PEOPLE ON BUSES TO THEIR RELATIVES.

THESE ARE YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK.

29/ May 30, 2019:

President* Trump’s CBP kills environmental impact statements from 1994 and 2001 “regarding certain activities along the U.S. Southwest Border.”

Because Individual-1 wants to build a wall at ANY cost.

And who’s REALLY gonna pay for it?

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
30/ May 31, 2019:

Homestead has NEVER had a hurricane plan.

31/ May 31, 2019:

President* Trump plans to make unaccompanied kids — in having asylum claims heard — FACE JUDGES FIRST.

Rather than non-adversarial USCIS asylum officers.

Because locking up kids in cages and violating basic human rights is not enough.

32/ May 31, 2019:

President* Trump cut off yet another kind of legal immigration.

37/ June 14, 2019:

USCIS decides to recoup money from EVERY immigrant who uses ANY federal means-tested public benefits.

They must now reimburse the benefits-granting agency for EVERY dollar of benefits.

39/ June 20, 2019:

One ICE facility decides to stop offering condiments to detainees, without explanation — aside from “budget cutbacks” for excruciatingly inexpensive products.

The cruelty is the point.

40/ June 22, 2019:

President* Trump repeatedly threatens cities with ICE Raids, and does not follow through.

This is how he terrorizes immigrants, making them afraid to leave their homes — and kids! — to go to work or to church.

41/ June 27, 2019:

Border Patrol plans to erect “pedestrian barriers” — WALLS — in cities in Starr County, Texas, including within the cities of Roma, Escobares, La Grulla, Rio Grande City, and Salineno, Texas.

Ignoring April 2019 public outcry against funding that by American taxpayers.

45/ July 2, 2019:

Coverup-General* Barr finalizes a rule for the Board of Immigration Appeals, allowing for them to rubber stamp Immigration Judges’ decisions without needing to give ANY reason.

They could average as little as EIGHT MINUTES PER CASE.

federalregister.gov/documents/2019…
46/ July 5, 2019:

President* Trump considers issuing an Executive Order to add a citizenship question to the census.

In blatant disregard of the Supreme Court ruling he had JUST LOST on the issue.

This blocks asylum for most Central Americans, Cubans, and anyone not from Mexico or Canada.

President* Trump orders rapidly increasing how many people to send to Mexico to wait adjudication of their immigration claims.

Most people sent to Mexico are asylum seekers fleeing dangerous gangs and violence.

50/ July 18, 2019:

They had already slashed the number in 2018.

51/ July 22, 2019:

55/ July 26, 2019:

DHS publicly instructs Asylum Officers to ask this question — as a reason to deny asylum claims:

Most will answer that their “home is the mouth of a shark.”

#ThreadOfAwful

Because he thinks they are less likely than Asylum Officers to believe asylum seekers.

59/ July 30, 2019:

For spurious reasons, such as old DUIs or unsubstantiated gang affiliations.

Because claiming asylum is legal in the USA, NO MATTER HOW A PERSON ARRIVES.
