Labour's current position on Brexit (courtesy of Emily Thornberry & others)
1. We think Remain is the best outcome for the UK
2. We respect the vote to leave the EU
3. We think we can negotiate a less damaging Brexit than anyone else
4. If we win a GE, we want to go to Brussels & negotiate the very best Brexit we can. One that protects jobs, etc. (you know the spiel)
5. We will then put our negotiated best effort deal to the people in a second referendum with an option to Remain (no deal too? don't know)
6. We will campaign for Remain because as we said we think it's the best option, but if Leave wins we will implement our deal (so that suggests no deal *wouldn't* be on the ballot.
7. This reflects the narrow result and won't damage the UK too much
If I have that right, it is both a genuine compromise, and almost guaranteed 24/7 ridicule like has been heaped on it the last couple of days. People don't do detail in this polarising debate. And the idea of campaigning against what you just negotiated sounds too bizarre.
(There is another even bigger snag: the EU have TVs and can read the British papers. So why they'd put a lot of effort into negotiating something they know you're going to try and campaign against, when they also want us to stay in, I have no idea.)
So I can see where they're coming from. They're trying to reflect the referendum result to annoy *none* of their voter base. But the risk of ridicule (if you're fair, it does sound daft) & negotiation conundrum scupper it for me. (Much much better than current situation though.)
But the biggest problem of all is that this complexity isn't a GE winner. So instead of getting a less harmful Brexit, we'll end up with whatever monstrosity the Tories foist on us.
