If Boris Johnson resigns (as PM, but *not* Tory leader) and Jeremy Corbyn takes over, then there's an interesting scenario:
1. Jeremy Corbyn asks for a *long* A50 extension, long enough to negotiate a "Labour deal" and also hold 2nd ref
2. He then tries that negotiation
3. At the same time, his "majority" is even lower than Boris Johnson's would be in opposition.
4. So that means Labour can implement none of its other plans that the other parties see as so damaging because they don't have a hope of getting through the HOC.
Above scenario might not actually be too bad, with key proviso that the A50 extension has to be *long*. If it's just a few months at a time, the idea falls apart. But if we shove it a year or more away (basically to the end of when transition would have been) it allows options.
And while they won't be happy, the EU might also allow themselves to be sold on an "A50 extension the same length as the transition period would have been" because it doesn't change very much. But I doubt they'd also offer a further TP on top of that.
It would be a super weird "stable longish term very minority government". It only works because the Opposition (Tories) would also be in quite a minority. So the only non-Brexit domestic stuff would be things other parties agreed were good for the UK. And that's no bad thing.
And so long JC never veers off the Brexit path and gets embroiled in implementing his big/daft Labour plans (depends on your perspective) then the other parties might be willing to keep him in office. (Alternative is BJ or a GE).
What's JC's prize? At the end of all this he can have a GE having had 12-18 months of showing the country he's not a monster, and having achieved a resolution to the impossible challenge of Brexit. And he might fancy his chances in such a situation.
