Thread. Lots of people commenting on NSA Bolton’s ouster, but @natsecHeather has a key observation: Bolton avoided the friction w/Trump McMaster had created by insisting on process, and fell out with him instead over substance (& personal interaction, probably).
John Bolton was probably the Trump administration figure who came closest to matching the President’s personal gracelessness. I foresee a couple of news cycles devoted to “I quit/no, I fired him” that Trump could have avoided & Bolton could cut short. With that said....
....Bolton made the job of the next NSA much harder by dismantling the process machinery McMaster had tried to preserve. Trump will want a replacement like Pompeo with prominent flunky qualities; he’s unlikely to get anyone better to take the job.

The US Senate returns from its August recess and goes back into session this week. Herewith, a short list of urgent subjects ripe for legislation.
1. Gun safety. 2. Election security. 3. Suspension of Presidentual emergency authority (to address Trump’s seizure of funds Congress appropriated for military construction to pay for his stupid wall). 4. Suspension of Presidential authority to apply tariffs on imports.
These are just the policy subjects, unrelated to corruption, Trump’s tax returns & things of that nature. How should Senate Democrats proceed?

University of Birmingham professor @PatPorter76, who recently wrote a book about Britain’s war in Iraq, doesn’t think much of @anneapplebaum’s attribution of Syria’s agony to the West’s loss of faith in its values, as he explains in this thread.

Here’s a terrible idea @ewarren shares with most Presidential candidates, of both parties. I don’t mean the fossil fuel lease moratorium or the fracking ban, though I think the latter premature. I mean Warren’s declaration as to what she’ll do in her first day as President.
This is a campaign trope. I can’t think of a recent Presidential candidate who hasn’t used it. And it’s ridiculous.
The day any newly elected President takes office — if said newly elected President has any sense at all — will begin with a thorough review of the inaugural address & the timeline of where the President-elect needs to be when throughout the day.

I think the best thing we can do with our teams is create a vulnerability based trust where we can be who we really are. We're never as strong as when we're ourselves.
