Thread. Lots of people commenting on NSA Bolton’s ouster, but @natsecHeather has a key observation: Bolton avoided the friction w/Trump McMaster had created by insisting on process, and fell out with him instead over substance (& personal interaction, probably).
John Bolton was probably the Trump administration figure who came closest to matching the President’s personal gracelessness. I foresee a couple of news cycles devoted to “I quit/no, I fired him” that Trump could have avoided & Bolton could cut short. With that said....
....Bolton made the job of the next NSA much harder by dismantling the process machinery McMaster had tried to preserve. Trump will want a replacement like Pompeo with prominent flunky qualities; he’s unlikely to get anyone better to take the job.
