Trump said they are doing "some very strong studies" on who is responsible for the attacks on Saudi oil facilities, but it looks like Iran is responsible. He said he doesn't want war but no country is more prepared for war, though that wasn't the case before he took office.
Trump added that the US is more prepared for war than any country in the history of "any history."
Trump said the attack on Saudi Arabia was very large, and "it could be met with an attack many, many times larger by our country."
Trump said it just happened "over the last very short period of time" that the US became the world's #1 oil and gas producer. That happened in 2012 under Obama, and it has been the case every year since.
Soon after saying it looks like Iran is responsible, a reporter tells Trump he said he thinks Iran is responsible. He says, "I didn't say that. Why do you say that? I said I think we know who it was, but I didn't say anybody. But certainly it would look to most like it was Iran."
So...Trump is saying it "certainly" looks like Iran is responsible, but he's not saying he thinks Iran is responsible, but "certainly it would look to most like it was Iran."
"That was an attack on Saudi Arabia. That wasn't an attack on us. But we would certainly help them. They've been a great ally. They spent $400 billion in our country over the last number of years," Trump said.
After praising Saudi Arabia's value as a US ally, Trump added, "So now they're under attack. And we'll work something out with them. But they also know, you know, I'm not looking to get into new conflict. But sometimes you have to."
In a rare story about a named person calling him Sir, Trump said that when he arrived, "General Mattis told me, 'Sir, we're very low on ammunition.'" He said Mattis told him to delay a possible conflict (with a country Trump didn't name) because of an alleged ammunition shortage.
"We are very high on ammunition now," Trump added. "That's a story I've never told before. Breaking news. But we were very low. I could even say it stronger, I don't want to say 'no ammunition,' but that gets a lot closer." ?????
Trump kept going and going, adding new details to emphasize this story and asking the Crown Prince of Bahrain if he could imagine being told this as US president. He said again that Mattis's message was even more dire than "low" ammunition, but "I'm not gonna go there."
On Trump's Mattis-ammunition story: the military reported late in Obama's term and early in Trump's that it was running low on bombs (usnews.com/news/world/art…). Don't currently know if Mattis told Trump to avoid a possible conflict for this reason, but there are some facts here:
