Breaking: UK asking EU to delay decision on #backstop until end of transition period in Dec 2020 - but still grant UK a deal for leaving EU on 31 October.

It's an absolute non-starter in Brussels. "It's like they haven't been listening for the last year" grumbles one EU official
The EU is insisting the UK give a concrete proposal for replacing the #backstop in next 12 days

In response, #Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said the UK wants the EU to agree to put off a decision on the backstop until Dec 2020 and give the UK a deal by 31 Oct in the mean time
Barclay also said in his speech in Madrid on Thursday that the UK cannot meet the deadline for coming up with a backstop alternative.

Confusingly, this is the opposite of what Boris Johnson has been insisting - that it is completely possible to find an alternative by October.
Breaking: As expected, today Michel Barnier unequivocally rejected Stephen Barclay's request for the backstop issue be delayed until the end of transition period in Dec 2020, and the UK be given a deal to exit in the mean time. politico.eu/article/michel…
Following Barnier's meeting with Barclay in Brussels today, the Commission said in a statement: “It is essential that there is a fully workable and legally operational solution” to the backstop before the UK is given a deal to leave the EU on good terms. #Brexit

The European Commission will at noon today publish its preparation plans for no-deal Brexit. Here are some highlights based on early info: (thread)

1) UK nationals residing in other EU countries will from 29 March no longer have the right to live/work there.
...in their words, Brits will not be given any special right to stay on the continent. But the Commission will ask member states to prepare national laws to allow them to stay for now, so they’re not immediately expelled.

It’s up to national capitals whether they want to do this
2) The Commission will put in place some sector-specific emergency arrangements, but these will be very limited in time and scope.

They include emergency arrangements to stop planes from being grounded, and measures for financial services to protect money flows.

Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the UN General Assembly says that the Westphalian system of nation-states, aka nationalism, failed. He warns against a return to this discredited unilateral model which led to so much bloodshed.
Macron warns that the current environment is not a blip. Things are not about to go back to normal. There is a crisis of the entire international system, and this is a moment of profound danger.
Macron: "After the second world war, for several decades, we saw a balance that was based on blocs. Then there was the emergence of superpowers. For several years now we've seen new global instability characterised by multiple centers of power."

The #backstop is there specifically to meet the UK’s commitments to avoid a hard Irish border & protect the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement & peace process.

This isn’t just of benefit or interest to the island of Ireland.
A broken Northern Ireland means a limping UK.

A v.brief explanation:

Having to apply & enforce customs procedures & rules around market access makes a border ‘hard’.
(just talking trade here)

Put simply, the greater the hassle in getting goods across a border, the harder that border is.

UK flagged oil/chemical tanker STENA IMPERO doing something interesting at the moment. It's port is the opposite way of where it's heading, and it's heading directly for the #Iran|ian island of Qeshm.. 🤔
The track of this ship is incredibly concerning, if it continues on it's track towards Iran, which it's only 9.5 nautical miles from..

Sir Graham Brady plans to table an amendment the Withdrawal Agmt (WA) bill to make it law that Alternative Arrangements (AA) to the #backstop must be in place by end of transition period.
So, he says, the backstop wd still be in WA text but it wd be clear it'll never be used.

Brady says the proposal would simply be bringing forward the #AlternativeArrangements from the Political Declaration up front in the UK legislation implementing the WA.

The rationale is that by making backstop unusable, it will create a majority for the WA in the Commons.

Brady says EU & UK govt have to recognise that his AA amendment is only means of passing WA.

He admits he is yet to persuade the PM but claims that "Downing Street has people actively engaged in looking for alternative arrangements" to the #backstop.

In most cases, Outlook was hacked, in some cases also Facebook, Twitter etc.

I searched through it 5 hours last night, read maybe 3%of it and already found cases of corruption and bad political scandals.
