Fuck your pro users.
I’m not joking. Everything that’s wrong with Twitter and YouTube boils down to them being cowed by their biggest users.
Your biggest users have problems and needs that normal users do not. If you’re building for them, you’re leaving the vast majority of your users in the dust.
Slashdot had it right decades ago in their mod tools: make a list of your users, most active to least active. Ignore the bottom third (not invested) and the top third (too crazy). Give the middle third all the goodies.
This would also benefit all those people who worry about creating addictive services: if you use them too much, the service stops catering to you.
The idea that YouTube should have “stars” who make a living doing it is absurd anyway. YouTube never promised anyone a career. They just promised free video hosting. That’s it.
When you have too many people following you on Twitter, it becomes completely unusable. It’s bad for the members. It literally makes them crazy. Cap the number of followers anyone can have. Why not?
Infinite scale makes everything worse. And these massive stars on the platforms make the platforms stupid as they bend to their gravity.
Fuck your pro users.
Case in point: YouTube screwing over their middle tier creators to cater to the big fish - the opposite of what they should be doing.
