A few weeks ago in Ukraine, I met w President Zelensky and we discussed the surprise cut off of aid and the inappropriate demands the Trump campaign was making of him. The obvious question everyone in Kiev was asking was - were the two things connected? washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
Zelensky did not explicitly connect the two in our meeting, but he was VERY concerned about the cut off of aid, and VERY aware of the conversations that Rudy Giuliani was having with his team. I told him it was best to ignore requests from Trump’s campaign operatives. He agreed.
I don’t know what is in the whistleblower complaint, but it was clear to me that Ukraine officials were worried about the consequences of ignoring Giuliani’s demands. And of course they were. That’s why presidents shouldn’t have their campaigns talking to foreign leaders.

1/ So there doesn’t need to be an explicit quid pro quo (aid for interference) for this all to be fundamentally corrupt, but let me make the case to you, in just a few tweets, that there is plenty of evidence that a quid pro quo was on the table.
2/ in the July 25th call, Zelensky asks for more security aid. Trump doesn’t say yes. Instead he asks for two things, immediately. First help to destroy Clinton. Second, help to destroy Biden.

1/ Okay, in a few tweets I'm going to try to explain what's going on in Yemen today, so you have some knowledge to counter this claim that America needs to bomb Iran because the Houthis bombed Saudi Arabia. It's complicated, but now you need to know.
2/ The conflict btwn Saudi Arabia and Yemen roughly dates from the 1932 founding of Saudi Arabia, when the new kingdom took territory from Yemen in a war set off by a border dispute. The Saudis has attempted to influence Yemeni affairs every since.
3/ The Houthis are a group of Shia tribes in northern Yemen who practice a distinct form of Islam called Zaidism. In the 1980s, the Saudis began a campaign to push Sunni Wahabism into Houthi areas, creating massive friction with Houthi communities.

You're right, Ted, it's hard to do this issue justice on twitter, but I commend you for trying. Here's my side of the argument, on why the 2nd Amendment is about collective, not personal defense, and allows the government to reasonably condition firearms ownership. 1/x
2/x First, you selectively quoted the Amendment. It actually reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." It references militias - not personal defense - for a reason.
3/x The founders were strongly opposed to America having a standing army. Madison called it an "instrument of tyranny". But a young America needed to defend itself. This is where militias come in, and the need to make sure citizens were armed in order to serve.

Amb Volker was VERY clear yesterday in his testimony that it is UNTRUE Pres Trump demanded a quid pro quo of Pres Zelensky that US aid was contingent upon an investigation by Ukraine into the Bidens:
1) Pres Zelensky had no knowledge aid was on hold at the time of the call.
2) In the readouts Amb Volker received of the call from not only the US gov't, but also the Ukraine gov't, there was no mention of aid being on hold or a quid pro quo.
3) When Amb Volker met w/Pres Zelensky on 7/26, there was no mention of aid on hold or a quid pro quo.
4) Amb Volker was in direct contact w Pres Zelensky & his team in the weeks to follow & they didn't mention anything to him about a hold on aid. It was until after the @politico story that they brought it up.
5) The aid was getting released regardless of any corruption inv.

OMB relayed Trump’s order to hold Ukraine’s military aid to State Dept & Pentagon in mid-July. Officials were instructed to tell lawmakers delays were part of “interagency process” & to give no additional info. Pattern continued for nearly 2 months, until the night of Sept. 11.
