So why does the Ukraine story warrant moving towards impeachment? It shouldn't require explanation, but I guess in this nearly postapocalyptic moment, we need it. It's roughly at the level of "why is cannibalism wrong". 1/
The thing is, if a chief executive feels emboldened to suggest a quid pro quo with a foreign state that is dependent upon our largesse in which they get what they want in return for them lying/exaggerating in a way that provides him political advantage at home, 2/
This is precisely what the venerated Founding Fathers, the people that originalists and conservatives pretend to care about, were deeply worried about--the corruption of "republican virtue" by non-republican powers at the borders and frontiers of a republic. 3/
If you don't care about any of that bushwah--you are not a conservative or an "originalist". You should obviously still care on a really basic pragmatic level: any time the person representing our national interest decides that his personal interest is the same? BAD. 4/
The US government, on behalf of us all, has an interest in the outcomes of political processes in Ukraine. None of that should depend upon "will they agree to make the son of a political rival of the current President look bad?" That's a horrific violation of democratic norms.
