This is deeply disappointing. Not because Labour is not going to adopt a Remain position in a referendum - it will - rather because it has faced an open goal and deliberately chosen to kick the ball into the stands. For first time I think a Tory majority is the likeliest outcome.
I can see why they did it. It’s a fair compromise position. But now we’re talking about what’s actually going to win votes. Lib Dems are explicitly Remain. Tories are explicitly Leave. Labour has now pissed off Remainers & Leavers who’ll all think the party is for the other side.
The fate of the Labour Party now rests wholly on Nigel Farage. If we go beyond 31 Oct and he stands against Tories, he may split enough votes that Labour will get lucky and sneak through. But if he decides to back Johnson for a later Brexit, Labour is finished.
