I wish I could get more enjoyment out of seeing mainstream news cover the Vic Mignogna scandal and come to the obvious conclusion, but I was here for Gamergate, and mainstream press didn't accomplish anything there either
It doesn't matter that Vic is obviously guilty, that his case is obviously fraudulent, that there's no actual two sides to this story. This was all true of gamergate as well
Ultimately, both of those "scandals" still served their purpose - drawing a bunch of impressionable young people towards right-wing conspiracy theories
The ringleaders will never admit they were wrong about everything. They'll just collect their checks and move on to the next anti-progressive fandom grievance campaign
All the damage will still be done, and lots of new people will be indoctrinated into a right-wing cult. If anything, mainstream coverage will only prove "how far the conspiracy goes"
Debating these people doesn't work. You can't argue someone out of a position that they need to believe in order to justify their own actions
Until sites like twitter and youtube truly take responsibility for their role in spreading harmful propaganda, this will continue to be a profitable business model
