aka we had to commit to renegotiate South Korea FTA in the future for them to agree to roll over (South Korea feel the deal was too beneficial to the EU in certain areas)
I wonder what the definition of free trade that the Cabinet agree on would be?
And what would a deal agreed in months look like? Would it actually offer any benefits?
Challenge protectionists by putting up our own trade barriers and doing a deal with the main protectionist?

And for this we need control of our trade policy? At least make it seem like there's some thought behind the great need

Top tip. If you call it "A fair and reasonable compromise" the other side in a negotiation are inevitably going to think it won't be anywhere near acceptable.

Now, if you're aiming for a domestic audience on the other hand...
The DUP veto on regulatory alignment in Ireland is obviously their price for all-Ireland regulations, but is a problem, no customs union and no checks equally, VAT is problematic. So is any of that negotiable is or is it take it or leave it?
The DUP get a veto on continued regulatory alignment and if they exercise it then what? Border? From every conversation I have had here about Ireland this is an incredibly careless and short-sighted proposal. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

If accurate and from this source that's likely the plan seems to consist of the worst parts of the backstop and no deal to ensure both North South and East West borders of some sort.
Plus some sort of time limit as well.

I'm struggling to see any way this is acceptable to the EU or Northern Ireland.
So the UK gov says take it or leave it to a deal they don't know is acceptable to Parliament, know isn't acceptable to EU or Ireland, and in direct contravention of a Parliamentary act. That's not negotiation, that's throwing around weight you don't have

Een belangrijk punt voor de fvd is dat de EU niet deugt. Het online partijprogramma is op dit punt (welk wel) overigens niet erg uitgebreid. We lezen iets over ondemocratische moloch en ‘kartel op kartel’. Wat dat inhoudt, wordt niet duidelijk.

De fvd zegt dat de #EU mislukt is en miljarden kost en de economieën in Zuid-Europa er door vernietigd worden. De onderbouwing voor deze beweringen ontbreekt. In de uitgaven voor de EU zijn de miljarden overigens niet terug te vinden.

Couple of points on the International Trade Committee’s meeting with Liam Fox this morning. On tariffs, FTAs and no deal. @CommonsIntTrade questions much better than the answers they got. /1
So Fox was asked a very valid question on the relationship between 0% tariffs and concessions during #FTA negotiations. No response. Interestingly he mentioned a range of gov unilateral mitigation and contingency measures ready for no deal and loss of FTAs. /2
Would be good to know what these are. We're assured that there is “a lot of activity” and “measures ready” with no indication what these are and as far as I’m aware very little consultation. Problem is- for them to be effective business would need time to adjust /3

Reports about the UK-Japan FTA negotiations, specifically that the negotiations are not as easy as some hoped, require two comments on negotiation strategy. One of them concerns cognitive bias (thread)
Let’s start with negotaition strategy. I have tweeted before that Brexit exposes partners to the fact that they have to prepare for mutliple scenarios (deal Brexit with transition and end state, no-deal Brexit). The Japan negotiations include another problem.
Namely that the UK wants to both enter CPTPP, a multilateral FTA with Japan as one of the partners, and roll over JEEPA, the EU-Japan FTA. So the UK is engaging in two negotiations with Japan (with the variable deal and no-deal Brexit)

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/
