I met these young women this summer in Rojava, Northern Syria. All of them grew up in small villages, where opportunities for women were few. Most spent years under ISIS domination.

Thanks to the Rojavan revolution, these women now have a life.

This is a cemetary for Martyrs in Kobane, Rojava. These people died fighting ISIS. They fought for us all.

In Afrin, where Turkey invaded last year, cemetaries like this were bulldozed. The same will happen to this cemetary and every other one in Rojava. If Erdogan gets his way.

These young women are all studying to be agricultural scientists. They work on an all women's farming commune.

The young woman on the right was forbidden by her family to do this. In Rojava, she was allowed to disobey them, and live life on her own terms.

This is a a monument in Kobane. The center statue is a woman, raising her fist defiantly to the sky. Around her are destroyed ISIS tanks.

A core aspect of Rojavan ideology is that authoritarianism cannot be defeated without ending the domination of women by men.

I caught this moment during a day we spent in Raqqa. A woman with the SDF consuls with one of her comrades on the scheduling of military patrols.

If you have not spent much time in Iraq and surrounding nations, I have trouble conveying how revolutionary this moment is.
