International things always “surprise” Americans because our major media outlets almost never cover international news. I always notice this when I visit Jamaica, where the shoestring news operations give citizens far more international news than the multi billion $ outlets here
Entire wars have been started, fought and lost around the world, affecting millions of lives, without a single mention in American news. The media pushback is that it doesn’t bring in ratings or subscriptions but it ends up affecting our lives so maybe cover it?
Maybe if our press had covered the Middle East more we wouldn’t have spent 2001-present suffering from terrorist attacks and wars and saying idiotic things like “how did this happen?”
Cause a lot of the rest of the world knows why this shit happened cause instead of a squirrel on skis they got a report about religious extremists taking over Afghanistan.
