Duty of silence guy has jokes
It would have meant a great deal if Mattis had really spoken out about the circumstances of his departure from the administration at some point between his resignation and tonight when we find American allies under a horrific threat of imminent ethnic cleansing.
Mattis chose to adhere to an undemocratic duty of silence that he had conceived for himself—protecting the president from accountability. Arguably that enabled Trump’s and Turkey’s worst impulses. So I find it hard to laugh along with the white tie patricians at that dinner.
