New paper on the growing demand for AI skills in the labor market, and how you can measure its diffusion and wage impact using the @Burning_Glass online job posting data (w/ Mila Alekseeva, @mireiagine, @SampsaSamila, and @Bledi_Taska) papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska Demand for AI skills has been growing fast in the last few years, especially in IT, Engineering, and Science occupations. But interestingly also in Management occupations. And we find that the AI wage premium is the highest for management.
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska There is an AI adoption S-curve, and larger firms are adopting AI first, and smaller firms following. This graph shows the intensity of AI job postings by terciles of firm market cap (the darker line are the large firms).
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska Also, firms with more cash over assets tend to start hiring in AI, as well as firms that spend on R&D.
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska (Unlike AI skills, the share of job postings that require computer and software skills has been more or less flat since 2010.)
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska The top 5 AI skills are "Machine Learning", "Artificial Intelligence", "Natural Language Processing", "Deep Learning", and "Image Processing".
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska We can look at how AI skill demand by firms correlates with firm characteristics. As we mentioned, firms that hire in AI tend to be large market cap, with lots of cash, and high R&D firms. Interestingly, there is no association between change in AI share and employment growth.
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska The wage premium for AI skills is very high compared to other computer skills, and (perhaps surprisingly) is highest for management occupations.
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska Finally, we don't see a decrease in non-AI wages for AI-intensive firms. If anything, we see an increase in wages for non-AI vacancies (but not significant once you control for job titles).
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska Overall, we see how you can describe the diffusion of AI in the labor market using the @Burning_Glass dataset. We see that the AI revolution is real. We don't see anything that looks at all like an AI apocalypse for non-AI jobs. At least not yet.
@Burning_Glass @mireiagine @SampsaSamila @Bledi_Taska Sorry, the correct link to the paper is papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… (the other link was for the common ownership trilemma)!
