Boris tells Commons he will not allow months of delay to Brexit. If parliament & EU delays until January or longer “the Bill will have to be pulled & we will have to go for a general election 1/3
Vote getting tight. Govt throwing kitchen sink at it ie threatening to pull Bill (stick) & trading with rebels on transition (carrot). My call is still narrow defeat but a lot of MPs not saying/undecided. Lots of behind scenes negotiations. So will go up to the wire 2/3
Also important to note: @BorisJohnson did not rule out short technical extension if programme motion defeated tonight ENDS

OK so, some thoughts on the excellent @EmmanuelMacron long interview transcript in @TheEconomist by @PedderSophie. Arguably it demonstrates the best of Macron – & the worst. It is difficult to imagine any other world leader speaking so deeply and so openly on so many questions 1/
But, as others have argued (@FHeisbourg) he sometimes talks like an academic or a commentator, rather than an important political actor whose words & tone of voice can disrupt the debate that he seeks – and therefore make his own success less likely 2/
Suggests Macron is brilliant man but clumsy politician? He did same thing domestically recently when talking about islam & immigration. Stating that Nato is “brain dead” may be true but it has produced heat & headlines & circle wagons, rather than stategic re-think he demands 3/

A few thoughts based on chats & @EmmanuelMacron interview @PedderSophie. Macron is determined to resist pressure to abandon his opposition to EU entry talks for Albania & North Macedonia – but he is ready to look at other ways of making them feel part of the ‘European family’ 1/
The next round in the battle – pitting France, the Netherlands & Denmark versus the rest – is expected at an EU-Balkans summit in Zagreb next Spring 2/
Senior French officials say @EmmanuelMacron is ready to look at ways of allowing Albania and North Macedonia to take part in ‘some EU policies’ before talks on their possible EU membership open at some unspecified date 3/

As we argued, @BorisJohnson announced Govt will bring in short Bill tomorrow for 12 December election. After he failed to win 434 votes needed for election under Fixed-term Parliaments Act - only 299 votes for, with 70 against 1/3
Lib Dems & SNP, who want 9 Dec election, will now negotiate over precise date. Want assurance Boris will not bring back his Brexit deal to Parliament before election . Still a live debate about that in Tory land 2/3
.@jeremycorbyn appeared to be moving towards backing Dec election; said will look & scrutinise election Bill. Still several hurdles to jump, including risk of amendments. But big step towards Dec election 3/3

We buy much more from the EU than we sell to them.

They need us, more than we need them.

Why the hell is nobody using this leverage in negotiations with the EU?

So why all this fuss that Johnson might actually try to get a #Brexit Deal through?
First and foremost it’s an acknowledgement that the Commons won.

The Benn Bill keeps No Deal at bay for 3 months. And even Johnson must realise that defying the Commons and refusing to extend at the European Council is a bad look.
Second, the Benn Bill *together with* opposition parties refusing Johnson his 2/3 majority makes an early election a less pleasant prospect for the Tories.

They’d have to go into an election having broken the leave-by-31-Oct pledge.

It’s understood her original preference was to ask EU for a short extension which could be lengthened if needed, or a long one with a break clause in it.
But @MichelBarnier told me yesterday that it’s short or long, not both.
.@MichelBarnier also made clear that a specific reason must be given to warrant an extension: “Needs to be linked to something new - a new event, new political process.“
So:
- election?
- 2nd referendum?
- new cross-party political declaration (removing May red lines)?

1) Again and again I’m struck by the chasm in thinking between leading MP’s on #Brexit and the viewpoint of EU leaders - and remember, if you want a deal, it takes two to tango
2) There is ZERO appetite or intention in EU circles to renegotiate this withdrawal deal
3) The EU would love the U.K. to remain a member of the club but if we’re leaving - then this is the divorce deal
