A confirmatory referendum would resolve Brexit.

A general election would be poisoned by Brexit.

It’s not a date, it’s a principle.
All those parties weedling their way to an election have shown their true colours - party first, Brexit second, our country a very distant third.
I thought the job of politicians was to solve voters problems. An election now would be to ask voters to solve politicians problems.

It could result, understandably, in a ‘plague on all your houses’ election.
We were ready to vote on a confirmatory referendum a week ago. Boris Johnson stopped us.

We were ready to debate the Brexit bill last week. Boris Johnson stopped us.

I’m ready to get this done - but Boris Johnson is stopping us.

Been thinking a lot about the Lib Dem / SNP election bill.

Makes me really sad that after so much cross-party effort the first we hear of it was in the Sunday papers.

If they had consulted this is what I’d have said 👇
Brexit started with a referendum which needs a majority vote to win.

A general election could result in Remain / PV parties getting over 50% combined but unable to implement the policy.

Yet Johnson could win on 35% and use it as a mandate for his bad deal or no deal at all
As the Brexit on offer is so radically different to the one promised.

As there’s been three prime ministers since the referendum.

And as we have the facts before us now, I think the need for a majority view specifically on Brexit, as before, is the only credible way forward

I want to say something about living with acute dyslexia because Twitter can be a pretty unforgiving place for people with unseen challenges.

Every day I get picked up on something I write. Mostly it’s kindly or humorous which is appreciated.

Sometimes it’s sneering or brutal
What’s it like? Imagine a car where the gearbox (my eyes) isn’t connected properly to the engine (brain).

Sometimes words are just shapes. However much I try to engage my brain, the connection just isn’t there. I can see the shape but it simply has no meaning.

Frustrating, huh
I don’t know why but some words are worse. Also I can learn, like this:

I was given a hard time recently for spelling ‘lose’ ‘loose’. It’s one of my common ones.

So I wrote them out with a ✅ by ‘lose’ and kept it on my desk for several weeks.

When I write it now...

Your govt government wants the impossibly complex legislation on everything from trade, regulation, security and Northern Ireland customs to pass all Commons stages in a day and a half.

Wild Animals and Circuses Act was a tiny bill and took twice as long
It’s 8pm and the huge and technical Withdrawal bill has just been published.

MPs don’t have time to read, discuss and consult before tomorrow.

And then only a fraction of 650 MPs will get to say a word.

Your voice in parliament is being silenced, plain and simple
Theresa May gave us four days debate for a meaningful vote.

Maastricht Treaty has 19 days debate

This is the most important decision for our country since WWII and Boris Johnson wants it over in a day-and-a-bit

This is truly shocking. A dark day for our standing as a country

As today is - once again - going to be about early General Elections, and an argument about 9 or 12 December to hold that election, here's a thread explaining all of it

In short there are 4 reasons for the argument about the date:
1️⃣ Dissolution
2️⃣ Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB)
3️⃣ Students and terms, and turnout
4️⃣ Return of Parliament
I will deal with each in turn

The argument is practical. For an election 9 Dec, dissolution will have to happen Fri 1 Nov (this week):

Can all stages of the Bill pass Commons and Lords by then?

Dissolution Tue 5 Nov means earliest Wed 11 Dec election

In 4 years we have had 3 prime ministers and 2 elections.If Johnson gets his way we would have 4 prime ministers and 3 elections. There have been 4 votes on some kind of #Brexit deal - all FAILED to pass /THREAD.
Yet politicians consistently refuse us a #PeoplesVote comparing the type of Brexit they want to impose against the deal we have - EU membership.
3.5 years after the advisory crooked lying cheating referendum, parliament cannot make its mind up on what is an acceptable #brexit for the country. You have taken up enough time and money on this nonsense. #voteleavebrokethelaw

Deja vu in the realm of #Brexit Extensiondom.. France digging its heels in while Germany and most other EU countries support idea of granting the 3 month extension mooted in the PMs extension request letter /1
France was the ‚hardliner‘ when it came to the extension back in April too. But then Macron was contesting European parliamentary elections against his eurosceptic rival, Marine Le Pen. He was using the Brexit extension to make a political point back home in France /2
Now too Macron is keen to flex his Mr Europe muscles. He thinks by granting only the shortest of extensions, the EU will help focus MPs minds, encouraging them to ratify the newly negotiated #Brexit deal that the majority gave a nod to on Monday night /3

The limitation of the divine right of kings, or these days dictators & prevention of tyranny

The barons basically said to the king that, "you rule us because we say you do".

This in turn became the Consent of the Governed, the basis of our Democracy
Consent is not open-ended, it cannot be given through omission, not can it be invented after the event, not can it be extrapolated from decisions which were not an option at the time.

Any of these factors would undermine the point of the clause, to limit divine arbitrary rule
