[1] A recent article in @thewire_in on the NRC process in Assam made me pen some personal thoughts given the recent move to implement it across India. I am not Assamese but was born and brought up there. My father was an IPS officer of the 64 batch of that state's cadre. #NRC
@thewire_in [2] If I still lived in Assam, based on the list of documents required to be 'Indian', I would personally struggle to prove my citizenship and residency. The only document that we may have been able to show is my father's service record.
@thewire_in [3] For that as well, we probably would have had to run around government offices and call in favours. Keep in mind, we are not talking about a relatively poor/ unconnected family - as I mentioned, my father was in the govt and retired as the DGP of Assam.
@thewire_in [4] Both my parents are educated and so were my grandparents, so even though we probably knew the importance of documentation, we still would not have kept some of the documents required.
@thewire_in [5] Now stop for a minute and think of the people who didn't have this education or access to information/ influence. Think of the amount of work, expenses and stress they would have to undergo to prove their citizenship.
@thewire_in [6] Which is why I am convinced that the #NRC in #Assam was a complete and abject waste of money which has only lead to pain and suffering for the common people of that land. Extending it to India will be a catastrophe.
