[Thread] 1/ Mike Pompeo tweeted on the 21st November a request in Farsi for Iranian protesters to send in videos of the regime's crackdown in order to 'expose' and 'sanction' the abuses. Both tweets, including the translation got a lot of retweets, but by whom?
/ Firstly Pompeo tends to save his foreign language licks for Farsi. Despite supporting other protests around the world - Lebanon and Venezuela for example - the US regime seems to have a special place in its heart for Iran, no doubt due to its Middle East Policy - support for
/ Saudi and Israel. The number of retweets achieved by Pompeo for these tweets was higher than his average - about 4k and 5.5k for each tweet. Apart from the novelty value of him tweeting in Farsi again, and the request for info, it seems somewhat anomalous
/ I download retweets of each tweet. For the translated tweet, I analysed around 3,600 individual accounts that retweeted it. Interestingly, the most cohesive community, and most commonly biographical detail was once again "MAGA". Indeed, 825 of the accounts retweeting it
/ featured the word "MAGA". If we add up all these Trump-related or alt-right/conspiracy terms we find that 1,260 of the accounts contain at least one of them (e.g. MAGA, Trump, WWG1WGA etc). That's around 41% of all accounts with biographical information!
/ As we've come to expect, many of these MAGA accounts were created on January 2017 and January 2018. This is the same type of profile we've seen accounts on accounts tweeting for a Hard Brexit (among other things - especially related to Iran).
/ A lot of the accounts are particularly spammy, with over 100,000 tweets, mostly retweets of various right wing, fox-friendly points. Lots of stuff one the impeachment of late. Again, these type of accounts seem distinctly active, and distinctively similar and on message
/ The same is broadly true of Pompeo's tweet in Farsi. The majority of the retweeters belong to the so-called "online MAGA movement'. I find that particularly weird as I assume most of them don't speak Farsi - so why retweet eh.
/ So in short, we once again see the online MAGA accounts promoting condemnation of Iran. United in aesthetics (american flags, memes, lots of RTs) there is clearly an element of co-ordinated activity & political spam. A generous interpretation would be to say Trump 'activists'
/ Remember the other day, we saw similar activity from the online MAGA movement on the #IranProtests hashtag. See here for details
