If we had a president who thought about a national interest, then it would be clear how abnormal this statement is.
This is ongoing investigation. Motivation unknown. Did SA know of any facts that ought to have been disclosed regarding his activities? Was his original vetting 1/
accurate and honest? Had leaders at Pensacola raised concerns about him to their higher ups at Pentagon? How was gun obtained? What funds were used to buy it since he was on Saudi payroll? Did he have friends amongst other Saudis who raised concerns or conspired? Is there 2/
Something the US can learn or modify about the program so there is stronger vetting and recurring vetting? I came up with these in my car at studio parking lot. Surely FBI has more but Trumps statements make it seem unlikely anyone in US will answer. 3/3 @cnn

On #Mexico . The terrorist "designation" issue is causing a lot of concern, mostly because Trump doesn't know the details when he speaks of it. I have worked on this issue in and out of gov and I think this binary approach -- "it's great or it sucks" -- is confusing for most. 1/
There are tools within the "terrorist organization" law that are exceptionally helpful and have been successful and welcomed by other countries. Mainly, anti-money laundering, sourcing, and terrorist financing. They give jurisdiction over the organization for US prosecutors. 2/
As usual, Trump has proceeded in a fashion that has rattled observers since he doesn't limit the implications of the designation. I'm back from Mexico and many are rightfully concerned that US might intervene to "deal directly" with terrorists with military intervention. 3/

The notion this Admin can be trusted to do right thing is a pipe dream, belied by the fact they have affirmatively adopted a no tolerance agenda. 2/
From a management perspective, it’s unworkable. As anyone who knows border management can attest, baseline rules matter. If Dreamers can be deported, then they will be. Better to have the rule exclude deportation, and fight exceptions in cases where a Dreamer should leave. 3/

At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?
