Because the data scandal was global in nature since SCL and its affiliates such as AiQ operate across borders, elections, and jurisdictions, collaboration between privacy regulators is THE NEW NORMAL. Also suggests UK ICO’s report is coming very soon. #DataRights
Custom Audiences — the microtargeting audience matching feature that Facebook badly wants to preserve and digital political technology consultants swear by. Google suspended their matching feature tho. We’re starting to wonder if it is even legal? #DataRights
This paragraph of the #AIQreport references the breach discovered by @VickerySec who noticed that AIQ had internationally put its source code and logins on a public repository, left sitting there for anyone to take. Sketchy negligence.
Use of custom audiences and lookalike audiences on Facebook needs to be spelled out in privacy policies in Canada and so intermediaries like AIQ got caught processing sensitive data without adequate consent. Microtargeting isn’t being explained to people. It can’t be so covert.

The solution here is not a covert surveillance dragnet training third-party black box data models. The solution here is a simple electronic mobile device check-in UX where attendance tracking is overt, transparent, and accountable, not camouflaged. Like signing a sheet of paper.
Who needs academic freedom when the algo can tell you what to research to optimize enrollment projections? Same algo pings your dean that you can handle another committee assignment after mining your edu Google Drive, email responsiveness, and geofencing.

Compare to the Mercer’s Cambridge Analytica/SCL which was subject to UK corporate transparency and data protection laws pursuant to US elections. Bloomberg’s political technology machine enjoys the secrecy and unaccountability that US law provides.
The concern is that plutocrats don’t play by the same rules as everyone else.
The problem of running government or a campaign like a business is perfectly illustrated here. Businesspeople try to get away with saving money at any cost and it’s only customers, regulators, and journalists that get in the way of getting away with it.

A common thread between this new Privacy Project piece and my PAPER piece is that consumers have been gaslit into surveillance capitalism using consent without rights as a cudgel. Industry deceptions that location data is “anonymous” lead to catastrophes like Cambridge Analytica.

Canadian Privacy Commissioner just posted report on AIQ (company involved in Cambridge Analytica and Facebook data scandals, Brexit and US elections). start with final paragraphs which state why Facebook needs to immediately ban microtargeting of political ads like Google has.
Basically says they didn’t properly use data for microtargeting in elections including US and Brexit. Timely report except for the dump ahead of thanksgiving. cc @donie
Report says their data was derived in part from the data which Facebook knew had been improperly harvested and sold then tried to cover up until it shook the world with global reporting by NYT and Guardian last March 2018.
