I have 2 words for Steyer, Bloomberg, and anybody else out there who still thinks pumping out millions upon millions of dollars is all they have to do to win enough hearts, minds, ground game and votes for a victory: JEB BUSH.
How Jeb Bush Spent $130 Million Running for President With Nothing to Show for It nytimes.com/2016/02/23/us/…
Furthermore, Trump was outspent by his closest primary opponents politifact.com/new-york/state… via @NYPolitiFact
By the time Bernie mathematically lost to Hillary after Super Tuesday in 2016, he’d already outspent her by 50%. npr.org/2016/04/29/476…
Bottom line is money raised vs. money spent isn’t the best metric to gauge grassroots support, especially not amongst voting demographics that don’t have the disposable income necessary to keep donating cash to buy a candidate for POTUS who’ll actually speak directly to them.
Apart from that, there’s no magic amount of millions/billions of dollars that will change the hearts and minds of people who’ve already decided to put their bigotry first when they choose a POTUS. There isn’t a perfect ad or populist plan for that, we just have to OUTVOTE them.
The WORK still has to be done to win the Democratic vote. People who already intend to vote against Trump (because our lives depend on it) still expect all the candidates vying for the nomination to EARN our votes by demonstrating that they’ll actually be a good steward of them.
Don’t just show me that you can raise and spend tons of money, show me how you can build a diverse coalition around your vision that’s capable of winning a general election with huge coattails and passing a Democratic agenda that’ll make it through Congress and onto your WH desk.
Spend some of these millions on voter registration drives and GOTV in the South, b/c ad buys in markets aimed predominantly at White voters aren’t gonna end or counteract the racist voter suppression that’s keeping these states red. IDK how many more times folk need to hear this.
These candidates are blowing through millions of dollars to make up ground they’ve already lost b/c they have no meaningful connection to the Democratic base and no intention of working on our behalf.
Bloomberg’s already spent $35 million as if he can MIB Neuralyze us into forgetting about Stop & Frisk. It defies common sense if you know anything factual about the Democratic base, but that’s not stopping the MSM from encouraging it or labeling it electable in this primary.
These candidates are barely attempting 1:1 interaction on the ground with voters they claim to be trying to sway, so it isn’t believable that they actually want to win the nomination or defeat Trump in the general. They haven’t even made a down payment on the Obama coalition yet.
Essentially all the billionaires have done so far is make it crystal clear which candidate has a ground game and inroads to the Obama/HRC coalition that they feel the need to spend tens of millions of dollars to “compete with” and shit on for the sake of billionaire mankind. 🙃
Waste millions if you want to, just don’t be surprised when money can’t buy you love or the necessary math.
ICYMI the takeaway from this rant is STOP 🛑 taking actual votes and the people attached to them for granted. The VRA was dismantled by SCOTUS in ‘13 b/c Romney spent a cool *billion* but still lost 332 electoral votes to the Obama coalition in ‘12. politico.com/story/2012/12/…
Don’t let them convince you that money = votes or that the Obama coalition somehow died and won’t be in the driver’s seat when it comes to deciding who’s actually earned the nomination in 2020. Money doesn’t = math either, the coalition ain’t that cheap. americanprogress.org/issues/democra…
