Mainland netizens have created a series of propaganda, demonising #HongKongProtesters and vocal supporters of the movement and even journalist. Purely in terms of efforts, it's an upgrade from the works we've seen in the past...
Whoever did this has also followed the news closely and thus able to identify different roles within protesters and inside jokes such as "freedom high". They even made up poems to accompany each character.
A lot of ppl note how this one, supposedly the "renovators" that vandalize mainland-friendly shops, looks far more like a police officer...
Jimmy Lai, Albert Ho, Anson Chan and Martin Lee, whom Chinese state media call the Gang of Four, are obvious figures to target. So no surprise here.
And Joshua Wong. But other lawmakers, lesser known in mainland China and play a less visible role in the protests, are also called out and depicted as different monsters.
Another unexpected figure is principal magistrate Bina Chainrai, who ruled ex-cop Frankly Chu guilty of assault for hitting a pedestrian. However, given the racist depiction, suspect she is targeted because of her ethnicity.
Also alarming is the deliberate attack on a press member. Nabela Qoser went viral for grilling Carrie Lam at a press con, but again, singling her out makes you wonder if race is a factor because it is easier for Chinese people to see someone of another colour as the outsider.
Wine-drinking white people with long noses, who else can they be but vampires? Foreign meddlers get the title of "cockroach diplomats" for commanding people to break the law. I suppose the raised eyebrows is to make them look evil...?
Another offensive, sexist and racist piece depicted Claudia Mo with a giant penis, so I'm not gonna share. It also describes her with the term "foreign sausage" once used by Junius Ho and got him kicked out of the LegCo.
Also not sharing caricature of Jimmy Sham, which mocked his sexual orientation by deliberately depicting him as a feminine-looking bat with lashes and long nails and described him with a gay slur.
Political opinions aside, these works are also appalling for the stereotypes and bias they reveal, discriminating against race and gender orientation, and even mocking a lawmaker for her brain tumour, which is stooping really low.
Before you remark on the originality, as some netizens note, the creator also seems to be using Japanese artist takumitoxin’s work as reference...
