Findings from Innovations in Health and Social Care discussions in Brussels today. 1. Integration: involve patients in key roles locally and nationally; involve wider range of stakeholders. Change narrative from ‘prevent collapse of system’ to ‘positive opportunities.’ /1
Need to better harness lessons from integration - not just what worked and why; but also what failed and why. Policy innovation sharing not just between nations, but between regions and between national sectors. Improve policy research collaboration eg on value creation. /2
On integration: use Europe as a natural laboratory but also recognise service innovations need to be customised for each setting. /3
Next: Paying for value and innovation. Interestingly, sometimes health organisations may be more excited about learning from regions in other countries than their own local regions. Also need to understand what works and why - and what doesn’t work and why. /4
Digitalisation of European health systems: Requires a systematic and multi-stakeholder approach. Adaptation and acceleration don’t happen overnight. Health professionals and patients have pivotal roles as end users and need to be engaged from the start. /5
Need to improve digital literacy of health professionals; accessibility and affordability of digital innovation; strategies to empower patients; and tailoring of solutions for personalised health and care. /6
Health and care workforce: we know the challenges, but not good at inplementing solutions. Need to improve transfer of innovation between countries and transparency of objectives/incentives to share, to build trust. We should improve implementation of all sorts of innovation. /7
