My investigation with @VICE and @typeinvestigate done over six months, analysing 500+ tribunal judgements received through #RTI. Do read.
@VICE @typeinvestigate 78% of the orders were issued without the accused present, known as an ex-parte judgement. In one tribunal, this was the case in every single judgment.
@VICE @typeinvestigate In 515 judgments analysed, about 82% of people on trial were declared foreigners. The numbers varied widely; one foreigners tribunal declared all its cases Indian, while another declared every person tried a foreigner.
@VICE @typeinvestigate Nearly 90% cases were against Muslims. 9 out of 10 of them were declared illegal immigrants, compared to 4 out of 10 Hindus tried.
@VICE @typeinvestigate The police investigations that form the basis of the accusation often appeared botched, superficial and biased.
@VICE @typeinvestigate Several individuals who had proved they were Indians were accused again within months, and faced trial in the same tribunal. Tribunals do not recognise double jeopardy.
