There is an endless twitter argument going on right now over the perennial question: "which future scenario is the correct one?" As the lead author of the US Natl Climate Asst chapter on scenarios, I have an informed opinion: NONE. science2017.globalchange.gov/chapter/4/
We can compare our emissions over the last 15-20 years with scenarios over that time, and when we do, we see that we are currently tracking with the higher scenarios. Will we maintain that trajectory? I sincerely hope not.
Here's the thing, though: by studying the outcome of various temperature thresholds such as +1.5, 2, 3oC** we are dynamically altering their probability - like Schrodinger's poor cat. The act of observing the impacts will hopefully inspire us to avoid at least some of them.

Infrastructure--buildings, transportation, energy, even communications--is critically vulnerable to climate impacts AND key to climate mitigation too. So this is a great move. @cathmckenna knows climate and understands why it's key to factor it into all our big-budget decisions.
@cathmckenna In the U.S., the American Society of Civil Engineers gave most infrastructure a D+ and estimated it would take $4.5T by 2025 just to bring it up to par ... not even considering the need to increase our resilience in the face of a changing climate. infrastructurereportcard.org

But that's the business side.

Sadly, the political rhetoric is now unhinged, exaggerated, irresponsible hysteria.

1) Greta says "people are dying". Not exactly. Deaths from natural disasters have plummeted over past 100 years.

2) Greta says capitalism is the problem when its driven down pollution by subbing gas for oil/coal, driven innovation lowering solar, wind, battery & other alt costs.

The German government unveiled a major policy package to combat #climate change. The subsequent discussion in the German media shows the huge political and economic cost of a simple-minded focus on #carbon pricing – it’s the 1980s all over again! A Thread @BMF_Bund @JWMason1
The policy package contains a mix of mainly sensible measures: A slowly increasing carbon price, public investment (public trains), subsidies for switching to green technology, transfers to compensate “losers”, and a plan to move out of coal energy.
What happened in the subsequent media discussion is very interesting. As expected, there was critique of certain transfers and subsidies that some groups did not like (“waste of money”). Also, the opposition parties were critical – no surprise here.

I commend @AOC, @EdMarkey & #GreenNewDeal co-sponsors for putting the urgent need to confront #climatechange with an ambitious clean energy mobilization on the top of the political agenda. This is an urgent threat. Confronting it is a real opportunity for economic renewal.

Leandro Ruiz Fernandez spent his entire summer in 2016 as a “super-volunteer” for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in the battleground state of Florida.

He made phone calls. He registered people to vote. Anything to help get her elected.
Then 18, he had just registered to vote for the first time as a Democrat.

After Trump was elected, Fernandez said he wasn’t one of those Hillary supporters who was crying in the streets. He decided to step back, wait and watch.

Short thread.
1. I didn't realize how badly Trump has eviscerated access to federal #climate data, so I went and looked at the USGS site.
2. In December, there were 5,932 climate science items linked there (9 were just pictures). Today there are 416 and 292 are just pictures.
3. In December 2016, 320 of those items were links to #climate data. Today, 0 links to data. 5,271 were web links. Now, 0 web links.
