As someone who was homeless in both my teens and 20s and whose first non-fiction book was about juvenile prostitution and homelessness, I have real concerns that nowhere in this article is affordable housing mentioned when that is a crucial issue.

40% of youth homelessness is #LGBTQ being abandoned by their families. Others cite abuse. Homeless people are disproportionately young, which is not mentioned here. Substance abuse dovetails.with homelessness as people self-medicate. Which leads to survival sex.

My concern after reading this is that no one involved at the state level actually knows WHO is on the street. So how can they help? And without access to affordable housing, there is nowhere for people to go. I did a series on this a few years ago. Homeless people want homes.

The whole tone of this piece from those interviewed is that pesky homeless people just need to stop messing up the streets. Like people actively want to be living in undignified squalor without food, water, shelter, cleanliness. Change the tone. Remember these are humans.
