[Thread] 1/ I spent time examining the two trends #NeverCorbyn and #LiarJohnson. As far as I can see these are the most popular, recurring anti-Corbyn and anti-Johnson trends on Twitter. The following is some interesting, largely descriptive insights into the data #C4Debate
2/ I downloaded around 45,000 tweets, replies and retweets mostly from the past 5 days. As you can see from the graph below, there are more #NeverCorbyn tweets than #LiarJohnson tweets. Perhaps this is surprising when you consider Corbyn's Twitter presence is larger.
3/ The hashtags tend to be quite steady through the day, diminishing only at night time. As I mentioned previously, the majority of the content is anti-Corbyn. Approx 17,000 of the tweets contain the hashtag #LiarJohnson, while approx 28,500 contain #NeverCorbyn
4/ Indeed, if you look right now, searching for #NeverCorbyn in Twitter indicates there were around 810 tweets in the last hour. That's a lot.
5/ This is partly down to the fact a number of the anti-Corbyn accounts are particularly vociferous. As you can see from the below network graph, the purple community shows the #NeverCorbyn tweets. Within it you can see a larger community of large nodes. The size of the nodes
6/ reflects how many times these accounts have tweeted on the hashtag. The most vociferous accounts in the sample are largely anti-Corbyn. (The single most vociferous - @pauljohndavies - is actually anti-Johnson). However some of the accounts listed here are bizarre.
@pauljohndavies 7/ This account, for example, which is extremely anti-Corbyn, has tweeted 583,000 times in their history. I do not even know how that is possible!
@pauljohndavies 8/ If you do a quick corpus analysis on the #NeverCorbyn tweets, you can see that one of the most salient issues appears to be, unsurprisingly, the anti-semitism scandal. As you can see, some of the most common keywords are 'antisemitism' and 'jewish'.
@pauljohndavies 9/ For those using the #LiarJohnson hashtag, one of the most common issues, again unsurprisingly, appears to be the NHS. It is the fifth most common term in all those tweets using the hashtag. Brexit also comes up a lot, which is quite interesting. #C4Debate
@pauljohndavies 10/ Rather oddly, when I checked both hashtags on the Twitter trend archiver trendogate, #LiarJohnson trended more, but mostly in Jordan. On the other hand, #NeverCorbyn trended mostly in Israel. Not quite sure what's going on here...
@pauljohndavies 11/ I have analysed other anti-Corbyn and anti-Johnson hashtags. The takeaways are similar, there is more anti-Corbyn information than anti-Johnson information. I'd wager a large amount of it probably co-ordinated, although not straightforward to analyse.
@pauljohndavies 12/ This is perhaps unsurprising, and generally supports other findings of the mainstream media, such as this study done at LSE, which finds that the media generally deligitmised Jeremy Corbyn since he became a political candidate lse.ac.uk/media-and-comm…
@pauljohndavies 13/ Some more info on accounts. The second-most prolific tweeter in the sample (not in terms of tweeting specific hashtags, but throughout its history), has tweet 1.2 million times! Also, it's a real charmer... Corbyn haters are in this company >
@pauljohndavies 14/ On the other hand, the 4th most prolific tweeter in the sample is clearly pro-labour and anti-Johnson, and has 1.1million tweets, also an obscenely large amount.
