For what it's worth, as wounds from #Brexit and #GE2019 are licked, this is what I think needs to happen (and not happen) next (THREAD).
1. It's crystal clear that you can't win an election in modern Britain if you're to the left of where Blair & Brown were. The argument #Corbyn wasn't Brexity or left wing enough is barely worth dignifying with a retort. Look at history post 1979, and the new electoral map.
2. It's also clear that the #LibDems will only ever, at best, be in a position to hold the balance of power, like a DUP. Our flawed electoral system means they will never break through beyond that.
3. No party who has won a majority is ever going to change the system, so all the current talk of Proportional Representation is lala land. When has it ever been in Tory or Labour interests to change the voting system? It's wrong, but it's a fact. We need pragmatism not dreams.
4. A new campaign to 'rejoin' the EU, after a Tory landslide on the back of a 'Get Brexit Done' slogan is insane. We haven't even left yet, and don't know the terms of our departure. It will alienate all those whose votes just prevailed.
5. The priority is to build a political force that can credibly attain power once the Tory regime starts to crumble. It will do, all governments do. But it isn't going to happen next year, or the year after. It could be a decade.
6. That force must be centrist and moderate. If Labour goes further down the Corbynista rabbit hole to electoral suicide, there will need to be a new Party. It should contain New Labourites, Lib Dems, Greens, and Leftist Tories. A Macron of UK politics, effectively.
7. Corbynistas can hang out with George Galloway's new Workers Party and the after-vomit of the Brexit Party. They will never get anywhere near power.
8. The new party should be pro European, but not dogmatic about what that looks like. It will represent the majority of the UK that remains pro European. It might, in time, have rejoining the #EU as a policy, it might not. It's too early to know.
9. That party needs to be built fast, but reality is we're facing a decade or more of #BorisJohnson. So we can go slowly enough to get it right. It needs economic competence, commitment to social justice, public services & the #climate agenda. These aren't mutually exclusive.
10. To all those who prefer tribalism, remember that timeless proverb: 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together'. We need a serious alternative to English Nationalism. Not least to keep the Union together, which is now at stake like never before.ENDS
