/ The #climateemergency is the defining political issue of our lifetime. Whatever changes of direction Labour's next leader pursues, radical action on global warming is non-negotiable. Let's have a look at the environmental records of the #LabourLeadership runners and riders...
/ In October 2019, the @Guardian produced a climate 'score sheet' based on 16 key parliamentary votes designed to reflect the full scope of the 2008 Climate Change Act, which is regarded as a landmark piece of environmental legislation with broad cross-party support.
/ It should be noted that some of the potential #LabourLeadership contenders have only been MPs since 2015, so it's not possible for them to have attended all the votes. Those elected prior to 2010 could have attended 16 votes, those elected in 2010 (13), those in 2015 (6).
/ First, it's @RichardBurgon. He has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. He has attended all six, with a 100% environmentally positive voting record.
/ Next up, it's @YvetteCooperMP. She has attended 11 of a possible 16 votes. She has an environmentally positive voting record in 8. She voted for Heathrow expansion in 2008, against @_wearepossible's 2010 10% emissions cut, and in support of Heathrow expansion in 2018.
/ Now for @RLong_Bailey. She has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. She has attended 5 of 6, with an 100% environmentally positive voting record in all five. She was one of four Shadow Cabinet members who did not attend the 2018 Heathrow expansion vote.
/ Next, @lisanandy. She has attended 9 of 13 votes since 2010. She has a 100% positive voting record on the votes she has attended. She voted in favour of permits for fracking on 26.01.2015, but did not take part in the vote to suspend fracking for 18 months on the same day.
/ @jessphillips next. She has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. She has attended 3 out of 6 votes, with a 67% environmentally positive voting record. She voted to expand Heathrow in 2018.
/ @AngelaRayner has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. She attended 5 out of 6 votes, with an 80% environmentally positive voting record. She did not vote on the 2015 Labour amendment aimed at reducing motor vehicle emissions. She voted to expand Heathrow in 2018.
/ @Keir_Starmer has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. He has only attended 2 out of 6 votes. He voted against Heathrow expansion in 2018.
/ @EmilyThornberry has been in Parliament since 2005, for votes 1-16. She has attended 13 of 16 votes, with a 92% positive record. She voted against @_wearepossible's 2010 10% emissions cut and did not vote to suspend fracking. She voted against Heathrow expansion in 2018.
@EmilyThornberry @_wearepossible 12/ Shadow Minister for Sustainable Economics @labourlewis has been in Parliament since 2015, for votes 11-16. He attended all six, with a 100% environmentally positive voting record. He voted against the Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing Regulations 2015 in opposition to fracking.
