[Thread] With regards to Libya. I estimate that Twitter have suspended approximately 309 accounts spreading anti-al-Sarraj propaganda. What follows is an analysis of the hashtag "السراج خائن ليبيا", which translates as "Al Sarraj is a traitor to Libya". #Libya
2/ Below is a network graph of the hashtag. Node colour is verified or unverified accounts (pink is unverified). The larger nodes are pink, unverified accounts. They are bigger because they are the most active in seeding the hashtag. They tend to send the hashtags to influencers
3/ You'll also notice on the right side, the blue edges between nodes, and on the left more pink/purple edges. Blue represents mentions, while pink retweets. What we can see then is the community on the right are active in tweeting at influencers, the left retweeting..
4/ As an example. Let's zoom in on this active and noisy seeding community. If we click on a few at random e.g. @dorya_soliman , @sarah_khalifuhh @mostafaelmokhta (go on, click on them - I dare you) - you can see that they have been suspended. This is true for most of them
@dorya_soliman @sarah_khalifuhh @Mostafaelmokhta 5/ If we change the size of the nodes (representing individual accounts) to be larger based on how much people are interacting with them, we instantly see that people target influencers - or vice versa. Three of the biggest - @monther72 @samialothman_ and @amjadt25
@dorya_soliman @sarah_khalifuhh @Mostafaelmokhta @monther72 @samialothman_ @amjadt25 6/ As this point it is not clear if the conversations are started by nebulous and dodgy accounts, seeded to influencers, and then boosted, or the other way around. I think generally we see both. However it is better to make such trends look organic and 'bottom up'
@dorya_soliman @sarah_khalifuhh @Mostafaelmokhta @monther72 @samialothman_ @amjadt25 7/ Also, interestingly, we know influencers sell their influence. In many cases I will wager they get paid to make political trends, we do know they get paid to trend commercial endeavours. Commodifying influencers will reduce incentives for them to generating their own hashtags
8/ Afterall, if you can get paid to spark a trend, why would you do it without getting paid? Unless of course you have other incentives - which is likely too.
9/ The accounts are criticising Al-Sarraj on the basis that he is loyal to Turkey and Qatar. Given the UAE, Egyptian, Russian Wagner group support Hafter's insurgency against al-Sarraj's government, it's likely the propaganda network is from one of the entities...
