Tokyo subway ads would be, lets see, housing, financial services, English language learning, cosmetics / beauty services, salaryman supplements, tourism (domestic, international, and increasingly "inbound"), job fairs, books, etc.

(No particular order.)
I am mildly surprised the Internet giants (domestic and international) don't run the table on subway advertising, but partly I think that is the Japanese advertising industry understanding earlier than the US news media who they were in mortal competition with.
There are some out-of-home brand ads in Tokyo these days for AppAmaGooBookSoft, including prominently a gigantic Amazon ad above an intersection in Harajuku, which exists to tell fashion enthusiasts "You are equally cool if you get the same look delivered next-day."
