A long thread of online resources on 26 Dec 2019 #AnnularSolarEclipse - the where, when, how and what - and also the why. In short, get friends and family together and share the #ASE2019 with the public. Eclipses are meant to be enjoyed in the company of many strangers in public
IMPORTANT - LOOKING AT THE SUN DIRECTLY WITH A TELESCOPE, BINOCULARS OR EVEN NAKED EYES WILL DAMAGE YOUR EYES OR EVEN CAUSE BLINDNESS.

This is not a total solar eclipse. The moon will be a bit farther away in its orbit around the Earth than is usual. This will make the Moon just a bit smaller than the Sun in the sky. Then it cannot fully cover the Sun, and at mid eclipse, a thin ring of the un-eclipsed Sun ...
.. an annular solar eclipse - can still be seen. Of course this is only in the annular belt. Outside this, you will see a partial solar eclipse. The further away you are from the annularity belt, less will the Sun be covered by the Moon. #ASE2019

The eclipse will start a bit after 8 am on 26th, depending on where you are, and end a bit after 10 am depending on where you are. The belt of annularity runs from south-west Karnataka and north Kerala through central Tamilnadu.

The folks at Navnirmiti have come up with a brilliant "Sun Festival" or Suryotsav that can be organised in schools and in public places around the eclipse itself. Read their lovely handbook to know more.

Eclipses, when u do not know what they are, can be scary things. People in every culture were afraid of them, believed they caused us harm, & developed rituals that they thought would keep them safe. We know for many centuries now that eclipses are just a play of shadows.#ASE2019
Family & friends may tell you not c the eclipse - gently explain to them that a mere shadow cannot harm you. And point them out to these resources. People in authority may tell you that they know that eclipses are harmful. You have the knowledge of science, rationality to counter
Read financialexpress.com/india-news/fro…, written by me in the context of a Lunar Eclipse and anti scientific and irrational beliefs propagated by powerful forces.

Eclipses are not meant to be enjoyed by oneself. They are meant to enjoyed in large groups in public. Something as awe inspiring as a solar eclipse, seen in the company of strangers, reminds us of our common humanity and shared goals ...
Bring your friends and family to one of these public events or organise your own, and share it with strangers. Share food and water - eating during an eclipse is as safe as eating during the night or in the shadow of a building. #EclipseEating #ASE2019
In many cultures, they believed that demons/animals were eating up the Sun during a Solar eclipse and people would make loud noises to scare it away. And it always seemed to work. We know that this is not what happens. But just maybe, a symbolic beating of our collective drums ..
...of rationality, science & common humanity in the form of pubic eclipse watching events on 26 Dec may just help chase away the demons of obscurantist beliefs, the weight of stultifying traditions, and myths and beliefs that keep us indoors and separate from one another #ASE2019
So go out on 26 Dec and see the eclipse for yourselves
Happy Eclipse to all of you!
