A recap of what's going on with RWA and Courtney Milan. It's a mess.

Also, it's important, even for authors who are not romance writers. Romance is the engine of publishing and RWA is the largest genre-focused writing organization. Everything here ripples out everywhere else.
Also, while I'm at it, I see some folks in my own genre snarking on romance and romance writers because of this mess. Don't be that person: You look bad, and silly. Romance could eat SF/F's market share without a burp, and also, their issues overlap considerably with our own.
A few years ago SFWA (the SF/F writers' org) had to deal with very similar issues RWA is confronting now. It wasn't easy and the org is still working to be better. So I have immense respect for the romance writers standing up and demanding better of RWA as an organization.
So, yeah: I'm openly admiring so many romance writers in this last week for, as one of them put it, "wrapping presents and raising hell" at the same time. I'm learning a lot from these writers. I hope RWA listens and does the work it needs to do.

In case you were wondering my thoughts on these things:

The Witcher: 90s syndicated TV fantasy with 10s streaming money + boobs

The Mandalorian: Baby Yoda distracts from mostly meh plots/dialogue

I enjoyed them both! But they were mostly just okay with occasional high points. Henry Cavill as the WitcherBaby Yoda as Baby Yoda
Also, to be clear, I'm okay with them being mostly just okay (with occasional high points). "Mostly just okay" entertainment fits my mood and attention span on a regular basis. Sometimes you just crave Taco Bell, if you get my drift.
What was the best TV I watched this year? Easy: Chernobyl. Bleak as fuck, as it should have been, but utterly compelling start to finish. If @clmazin did nothing else with his life from here on out, he'd still have his masterpiece (but, you know, keep working, dude). Still from Chernobyl with Stellan Skarsgaard and Jared Harris.

1. Recent events have prompted some folks to ask me to assure them that I will never be problematic, so they can continue to read my work with a clear conscience. Folks, I have some real bad news for you: I can't promise that, and here's a thread on why. Ready? Let's begin.
2. To begin, I can't promise that because I have *already* been problematic at various points in my past -- I've shown my ass in a number of ways. I try to listen to friends/others when I do show my ass, and do better, but it has happened before, and will probably happen again.
3. I can't promise because there are gaps in my personal knowledge and experience, and sometimes I will do/say something problematic because I didn't know, and also, I didn't know I didn't know. What one does from there is important, but I'll still trip over lines I didn't see.

1. So, a friend on @Facebook pinged me with this ad she saw there for a talcum powder lawsuit scheme and said, "isn't that Krissy?" And indeed, it is -- and the picture strongly implies that she's holding a settlement check.

This is not true, and also, the photo was stolen. Krissy, holding a check.
2. The picture, which I took, is actually Krissy holding up our last mortgage check. I wrote a piece about that moment here:

The check is going out, not coming in. Krissy's happy because we paid off the mortgage, not because she's gotten a settlement. The picture as it appears on my site, in 2015.
3. Also for the record, Krissy is not now nor has even been a party to a suit regarding baby/talcum powder.

Okay, about this #RWA #IStandWithCourtney mess, having compiled all this info over the last few days, I'm going to go out on a limb and take a guess at what went down.

This is largely me speculating, just to be clear. Strap yourselves in, this is gonna be long.
So... Courtney Milan is making waves in the RWA, pushing for diversity and inclusiveness, calling out the Nice White Ladies (NWLs) who have been the backbone of the org for years in spite of their bigoted tendencies.
Tisdale/Davis/Grimshaw come under fire, and they don't take it well. Because how could they be racist, right? They don't hate people of colour! They're not card-carrying members of the KKK or neo-Nazis!

Why is the mean Chinese lady attacking us?!

I've been seeing a lot of writers organizations pitching their membership to people affected by the recent #RWA conflagration. The thing is these organizations offer some good services and benefits (assuming your genre of Romance overlaps with their main genre focus). 1/23
For instance, I edit a lot of SFF Romance that would fit in either RWA or SFWA (Science Fiction Writers Association). I've also edited some Paranormal Cozy Mysteries that would fit in RWA, SFWA, and MWA (Mystery Writers of America). 2/
Almost all of these books would qualify for the 3rd alternative option I've seen mentioned - NINC (novelists, inc) which has no genre requirements, other than having published works over 30,000 words. 3/

Yesterday late afternoon #Russia/n forces took 3 positions in Qusseyr and Juseh and established checkpoints. #Hezbollah, not informed of the Russian presence, came close to these forces and asked their immediate pull out+
Following the direct intervention of President Bashar al-Assad, the Russian force pulled out this morning and avoided any clash with #Hezbollah in the area.

hezbollah maantin and kept all positions. The #Russia/n move was not coordinated.+

#Hezbollah did not...I repeat, did not pull out one single element from the area.

I spoke to people on the ground: The Russian decision was unclear and considered unwelcome by the forces on the ground. Still, many elements of this move are unclear.

They're your boots, your backpack, and your bottle of water. They aid you on your journey, but you're still the one who has to do the walking.

And it can be a lonely road. So find a community to share your troubles with. Lots of people have walked the road before you, and many will be happy to guide you.

Many #writers wander into the craft with an idealistic mindset. I know I did. I thought it would be easy.

It's not easy. It takes hard work and and lots of failure. It takes being knocked down and getting back up. It takes time.

But think about it. If it were quick and easy, what would be the point?

The value lies in the challenge.
