This piece on public animus toward Orthodox Jews hits home for me. In my experience, it's a problem not limited to gentiles, but one for secular, liberal Jews (like me) as well. nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…
My sense has always been -- and much of this is a vast blind spot for me, so take with a lot of salt -- that this is at least in part out of a feeling that Orthodox, more politically conservative Jews don't think that secular, more politically left Jews are real Jews.
I have no wisdom to offer here, it just seems bad.
So many debates on this website between secular left Jews and Orthodox conservative Jews seem to turn around accusations of cowardice and hypocrisy and bad faith, particularly when the subject is antisemitism...
... but my sense is that a better explanation in most cases is not bad faith, but that those factions disagree on what constitutes anti-Semitism and how to respond to it the same way they do virtually everything else, and also seem to despise/have contempt for each other.
