I’m glad to see folks talking about AG’s new disabled character. I’ve been writing about disability in the brand for years. Gabriella in 2018 was the first explicitly disabled main character though one could argue McKenna & Maryellen are too.

Black folks in SFF & black folks in SFF only (do not respond if this doesn’t apply to you please): Has anyone else noticed how some Afrofuturism fan groups/lists become a gathering space for hoteps & their particular brand of misogyny & racial essentialism?
I’m in two groups & it seems to be getting worse. I feel like the rise of popularity of #afrofuturism & #africanfuturism has attracted a lot of problematically/single issue pro-black kind of cis men who seem to hate women, queers & mixed race folks. Am I just in bad groups?
I tried to post in the group naming what I’m seeing and asking folks for suggestions of other groups and this is what I got from the admin of the Afrofuturism group on FB so I left.

I was feeling so sad to leave & a miracle happened. Our driver stopped at a roadside stand in Montego Bay for us to get a final fresh coconut. We were getting ready to leave when a truck pulled up on the road honking.
I looked at it and was like “that looks like my brother’s truck.” And sure enough, it was my brother driving a delivery for work! He saw us on the side of the road & stopped! He came out to give me a final hug & goodbye. Jamaica just blessed me with a final goodbye miracle 🖤🇯🇲🖤
Seriously, what a storybook perfect end to an awe-inspring trip!

1/ When I got home from an appointment this morning, I was met by a neighbor who didn’t want to identify themselves other than to say they lived in one of the cul de sacs that’s connected to our small dead end street. The neighbor curtly asked if I was the homeowner or a renter.
2/ I let him know I was the homeowner, and he informed me that he has been trying to sell his nearby home for sometime without success, and in his opinion our lack of upkeep on our landscaping was partially to blame.
3/( I admit, we had a lot of tall crabgrass in the plants along our front porch, and the bushes along the street are in desperate need of trimming. We also need to get our dandelion situation under control. )

Well - it's my birthday today. It's also 3 weeks since we provided @RedbridgeLive with a clear list of emergency needs as disanled, homeless people, that they need to help us meet as per the Care Act. NONE have been met.
@RedbridgeLive So - NO access to disabled bathing facilities suitable to our impairments, for months now. No hairwashing/drying. No support in accessing food, made increasingly impossible by disability, but also complete lack of cooking and refrigeration facilities.
@RedbridgeLive The distance to the car is too much for me, and for Stevie. She last "went out" on 16 January when she was forced, with Sean, to transfer to another Travelodge while I was in hospital. She hasnt seen anyone except me and her brother since.

It’s #WorldMentalHealthDay, and I am so proud to live in a time where people are starting to be more open about their mental health issues — because it’s important to reduce stigma and it helps others not feel alone, but also, in my case, it’s important for me to say the words.
It helps me for many reasons. When I talk about living with bipolar disorder and alcoholism, I am able to own those parts of my life — those parts of who I am — and that makes them less scary and more manageable.
Talking about it also reminds me that I have to remember that I face those issues. It’s easy for me, at moments, to convince myself that I am leading a pretty awesome life and have “moved past” them. Spoiler alert: I haven’t.

When fighting Ableism, straw bans, inaccessibility, or the general oppression of society, I am uncomfortable that we tend to resort to, "What if you/your kid/your spouse/your friend/family member was disabled & needed this?"

It paints disability as something negative & to fear.
We can, or should be able to, state our truth, or the existence of others' truths, without relying on using hypothetical scenarios that target subconscious negative views and beliefs held by society. #Disabled #DisabledTwitter #StrawBan #Ableism #FightWithoutFears
