Twenty years ago I was in the middle of dirty wars in Colombia, Liberia, Chechnya and many others. Many are now over, many continue. So there is some hope.
In some places like Afghanistan and Sudan I was in the war in the mid 90's usually on the wrong side, and then returned a decade later to see the same bullshit. Tribal and ethnic warfare with civilians being slaughtered for no good reason.
In Afghanistan I was with the talibs while they were killing the Northern Alliance and with the Northern Alliance while they were killing the talibs All this before 9/11. Esoteric research into war to write my book: The World's Most Dangerous Places.
Then after 9/11 people suddenly said. "Hey this guy knows all about Bin Laden, the talibs and was in combat with a small Special Forces group in Afghanistan they now call the Horse Soldiers. Same shit, different decade.
In 2020 what can be done in a post truth era? When wars are endless and incomprehensible, journalism is meaningless vocation and violence is just as likely in your local church as in a remote valley thousands of miles away? What is the answer? Do good. Care about your world.
