I love seeing breakdowns like this. Ten takeaways:

1. The gaming category is dominated by two key developments:

- multiplayer live-action esports
- hypercasual

The first is here to stay (although rankings may shift), and the latter will seriously morph.

2. TikTok being #2 on the social/messaging category is an important development, but Facebook’s apps still dominate 5 out of the top 10. Despite upstarts, the big are getting bigger.

3. Hotstar doesn’t get enough attention.

4. Uber is #1 in two categories: food and travel. No one single competitor in either category is close.

5. McDonalds got more downloads than Doordash, Grubhub, and Postmates. Can the biggest brands can bypass the food delivery consolidators?

6. Tinder is a juggernaut.

7. Square’s Cash App continues to outrank Venmo, but it surprised me to see a PayPal app beat both of them. A short-term bump or a long-term trend?

8. Booking topped Airbnb and all other OTAs, impressively bypassing any reliance on search engines.

9. Spotify isn’t a fantastic business, but it’s clearly an aggregator, which could lead to more optionality and pricing/negotiating power in the future.

10. I don’t know what half of the shopping apps even are! Time to dig...
