NYT and Wash Post try to depict #Soleimani as a popular Iranian leader, mourned by tens (hundreds?) of thousands of Iraqis and Iranians, is misleading (again, either on purpose or due to incompetence).
Truth is, Iranians who took to the streets to protest fuel tax and demanded end to Mullah regime, were shot by regime snipers who aimed at hearts and heads, killing between 1,000 and 4,000. In Iraq, #Soleimani's snipers killed Iraqi demonstrators who protested Iranian militias
When the Iranian Mullah regime's snipers kill its opponents in the streets of #Iran and #Iraq, but allows -- or rather sponsors -- rallies showing support to Soleimani, then NYT and Wash Post using rallies as gauge of public opinion becomes faulty. This is simple common sense.

Thread - What we know from #Iraq vs What US media has been reporting.

What we know:
1- In its session to vote on non-binding resolution to eject US troops from Iraq, Iraqi Parliament did not even have a quorum (barely got to 130 of 328) @BilalWahab
2- Despite Kataib Hezbollah’s (this is the militia of Mohandes who was killed with Soleimani) death threats to lawmakers, they still abstained from attending to vote against the US @BilalWahab
3- Iraqis continued to rally in the streets against parliament, its vote on US troops and against Iran and its militias in Iraq in general. See @AlhurraIraq here:

For non-Arabic speakers, reporting in the main news outlets NYT and Wash Post is so misinformed (either on purpose or because of incompetence) that you might think that the Iraqi State has officially voted for ejecting US forces from Iraq (because of Trump's miscalculated move
to kill Soleimani). What happened is different.
1- Iraqi PM Abdul-Mahdi sent a letter to Parliament in which he argued US troops exist in Iraq, not based on a treaty ratified by Parliament, but on 2 letters from past cabinets to the UN. Hence, Parliament has no role in ejection.
2- Iraqi PM's trying to trade disarming Shia militias for limiting scope of US troops. He wrote: "Whoever wants to become a political power, has to surrender arms, join armed forces, and forgo any political allegiance (i.e. to Iran) other than to military and commander-in-chief."

Analysis - legitimate liberal concerns about feared Iranian military escalation after Trump’s bold gambit, and my considerations in reaction:
1) Concern: striking #Soleimani was in violation of international law
Consideration: Trump designated IRG as a terror group. If you reluctantly accept Obama’s strike against Bin Laden, and recently Trump’s of Baghdadi, it isn’t *technically* much different,though it is in reality
2) Concern: in reality the IRG is also Iranian military (Iranian Revolutionary Guard) & so (even though its backing of militia in Lebanon, Syria & Iraq is irrefutable) it is also *more* than a terror group. It is the national army of a state. So they may still respond with war

10 signs to watch for by people tweeting who know nothing about the Middle East but will now talk as if they do:
1) before yesterday they’d never heard of #Soleimani & still struggle to remember what his first name was
2) they’ll proactively and without invitation, condemn “America in the region” without saying anything at all about “Iran in the region”, thinking this wins them brownie points from brown people from the region.

It doesn’t.
3) at some stage, they’ll either accidentally tweet out or otherwise approve of official Iranian state propaganda & voices sent by the theocratic regime, without realising, it because they have absolutely *no idea* how to recognise Iranian proxy propaganda voices

[Thread] There are so many angles to #Soleimani’s death that it will take time to grasp the full picture of it. But let’s try to look at a number of issues :
1/ The event : #Soleimani was one of the most important actors of today’s Middle East politics. His killing by the US is the most significant event in the region in recent years. Twitter tells you analysts are in shock : “we enter unchartered territories”.
2/ The spy : Head of the #IRGC, he was the face of Iranian regional expansion in the 2010’ and the architect of a network of militias in #Iraq, #Syria, #Lebanon, which has shaped these countries’ current situation.
