Last night, a spontaneous gathering of people grew into an all night protest by women which resisted all attempts to break it up.
To understand Hyderabad, it is important to know why and how it happened.

Since the time the country came out to #RejectCAA_NPR_NRC the @HydCityPolice has been denying its citizens the right to protest peacefully. Frustrated when permissions weren’t given, the city adapted the Hong Kong model of #FlashProtests.

“Be like water” became the motto. People arrive silently at a destination, protest, and disperse. Even these were broken up by the police. The protestors knew their rights, the police didn't. But when posters are snatched away, you can’t protest.

Protests continued. A group wearing teeshirts with slogans, and singing songs of resistance. Another taking a ferry to an island and protesting, only to be met by the police when they return.
The more you try to silence, the more people will resist.

When the police finally gave permission, lakhs of people joined. #HyderbadMillionMarch and #TirangaRally both attracted record crowds.
But the frustration remains. The frustration of not knowing where your government stands on NPR/ NRC.

After the #TirangaRally, there was a #FlashProtest. It was broken up. There was another the next day, also broken up.
But the people weren’t giving up. They know they want to #Reject_CAA_NPR_NRC, and they want a statement from the government against it.

It started as a call for a #FlashProtest, but grew into a spontaneous gathering determined to protest peacefully through the entire night. 500 women sitting at the heart, men supporting from around them.
The police tried repeatedly to break it up.

The police came again and again. And were sent back each time. The numbers kept increasing.
Lathi charge. People injured. Yet the women didn’t budge. They were going to sit the night out.
The determination to make their voice heard.

Protestors were taken into custody, but the protest continued. The police said they would be released if the protestors dispersed.
By then, dawn was breaking. The protest had lasted all night.
The women dispersed, reluctantly.

With no real organization, more than 1000 people protested on the street all night.
It is one message Hyderabad wants to send out.
We know our rights. We #Reject_CAA_NPR_NRC.
You can try to stop us, but we will make ourselves heard.

Special mention has to be made here of @stoppression for coming up with this. And to all the amazing people who have just not given up. @RubinaMazhar @dr_beelzebub and many more, too numerous to mention.
special mention must be made of @vivekan33332148 who drove from the other end of the city to join the protest, and was among those detained by the police.
