This is stupid. Mothers involved in birth tourism aren’t “migrant women”. They go home. Yes, the scale is debatable as is need for govt action, but the phenomenon is certainly on the rise in Richmond B.C. as per hospital stats on non-res births and in absence of other explanation
There are ignorant assumptions here, that this situation is something about disenfranchised women who want to stay in Canada. It’s not. It’s about savvy and well-off-to-rich parents who quite reasonably think a Can passport would be good for baby & will pay $30k to get one
I get that some people look at a non-white pregnant woman and for some reason feel compelled to assess her to be a victim or to lack agency over her situation. But it’s patronizing and racist and wrong in this case
I don’t make any claims about the wisdom of a policy response. But please don’t frame birth tourism in Canada as being about marginalized people. It’s quite possible for a non-white foreign pregnant woman to be in power over their own situation you know
I don’t see need for Canada-wide hysteria; But it’s a big, weird situation in one Richmond hospital, & people there are reasonably upset abt it, as per CBC’s reporting. It’s not a racist myth, tho the subject gets some racists all sweaty. But it upsets normal, reasonable folk too
