Yesterday I lived through an "extreme weather event". Those words fail to convey the violence of what happened. A storm cell with apocalyptic hail hit Warrandyte and many other places. These events are in the news daily and are now starting to become commonplace.

Formerly the weather was a short segment that came at the end of the news. Now it is the news, and the deeds and decisions of humans gets scant attention. This is because of the changes we have made to the planet and to its systems; because of climate change.

Climate change threatens us in so many ways. It pollutes the air we breathe, reduces the amount of water we have to drink and threatens the supply of food that we eat. Climate change can destroy the buildings we live in and the machines that we use.

Climate change forces people to leave their homes, it throws people out of their jobs and it disrupts economies. Climate change threatens our transport systems, it overloads health and emergency workers and it shuts down industry and agriculture.

And we know that climate change can burn us, it can break our bones, it can drown us - climate change can kill us.
We have evolved in response to the conditions as they used to be on this planet. Now we are changing those very conditions.

This is not wise. This is not safe. Our ability to survive under the future conditions on the planet is not guaranteed. Neither is it certain for the millions of other life forms that we share the Earth with.

The last four months has been a catalouge of disasters here is Australia. Many other countries have also been hit even harder in that time.

They used to be called natural disasters and they used to be rare. But what is happening now is not natural at all.
