There's a seriously big turnout for climatologist David Phillips tonight at @NLGEOCENTRE. Let's hope he does some real talk on #climatechange. He's already given a pitch for #yyt + #windpower
Plenty of chuckles from the crowd about our crummy weather (wettest... windiest... etc) stats #nlwx
David talks about the transition
1) global warming
2) climate change
What's next? 3) atmospheric terrorism
#nlwx
How extremely timely that David Phillips says to this room of 100+ ppl that we shouldn't build in floodplains. Build safe communities. Let's hope everybody keeps that in mind when they head to the polls #nlpoli #sjpoli #healthcare #nlwx
One thing for sure, David Phillips sure knows his #geography. He named over 10 small towns in NL! @MUNGeog
I'll recap what other tidbits David Phillips mentioned tonight that stuck out for anybody interest #nlwx
Phillips mentioned that ere seeing not just a change in #climate but a change in day to day #weather too. He noted that weather (vs. climate) is more familiar but now is becoming out of our familiarity #nlwx
Phillips referenced the 1996 #flooding in Saguenay was the biggest eye opener he ever had. It was a billion dollar disaster. Busiest time of his career: 1998 #ice #storm which affected 4 million ppl
"no off season when it comes to #weather #extremes" (in NL). It's a constant show for climatologists & meteorologists #nlwx
Moving into the #climatechange topic, Phillips notes that we're breaking records at a phenomenal rate. #Weather on steroids. #Insurance companies are spending more on #extreme weather events rather than home 🔥 s.
Phillips clarifies that we're not seeing typhoons in Trinity or sandstorms in Stephenville. We're seeing our grandparents #weather but lasting longer. #Rain that lasts Thur-Sat [really, is that actually rare in #nlwx?]
The #science of #weather has changed. Where is 🌧️ falling? On what kind of surface? By cutting down 🌳 & draining swamps we're destroying nature's #resistance. Changing the surface = changing the response. What's the response of 🌧️ on a paved parking lot vs 🌧️on grass #nlwx
Phillips referenced a summer & fall warming being more common in Atlantic Canada. While enticing & carries truth, it's a broad statement. Within NL alone there is relatively large variability. Key word: relative #nlwx
Phillips refs a common statement we hear: 'I can't wait 4 warmer Cdn winters!' (pos - longer grow season) BUT w/ warming comes consequences (neg - increased Lyme disease) Moral: #ClimateChange is a pkg deal, not à la carte. What we've got now is better than what we'll get #nlwx
Phillips explicitly stated that he'd avoid the topic of #fossilfuels & #CarbonTax, followed by: sometimes we fear the solutions more than the impacts
Much like @MothersInvent podcast guests have stated, #climate action will fall on individuals & towns more than lg gov't. Local levels of change. Start small. When we're more preoccupied w/ our marble countertops rather than the wetlands in our backyard we won't progress #nlwx
