This has always been my favorite MLK Jr quote. But boy, has it taken on special meaning this year:

"Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."

What we have going on now in the Senate is pure conscientious stupidity.
MLK Jr. is 1 of my very favorite historical figures. Like my other favs he is flawed (though I should note, MUCH less flawed than the others, who were heroes AND villains) bc he was human. Humans are nuanced. Humans can be simultaneously good & bad. Humans can redeem themselves.
Most Americans don't know the FBI put MLK Jr. under what would be today illegal surveillance. In fact, all the crazy conspiracy theories Trump has about Deep State conspiracies actually DID happen to MLK Jr. & other key Civil Rights movement leaders. There were even efforts to
set them up and frame them to destroy their reputations & thus neutralize the "threat" he presented to the status quo. Indeed, there were many reforms put into place in the FBI & justice Depts bc of their illegal, abusive activities in the 60s that leave both agencies FAR more
regulated than they were back then, & until recently, until the Bill Barr assault, both agencies have been running fairly clean ops (yes, I am aware of the surveillance & infiltration of the anti-war effort during Iraq). They're not perfect, but when they are abusive its the Left
not the Right that has generally suffered for it. But I digress. MLK JR. produced my 3rd fav historical document when he penned The Letter From Birmingham Jail on the margins of the local newspaper from his jail cell in Birmingham during the Birmingham protests. The letter is a
response to an op-ed that appears in the paper from local (white) clergy who attack MLK Jr for breaking the law as a "man of God." And to put it in today's terminology, MLK Jr gives them a good ole fashion smack down. Its a thing of beauty every American should see & luckily,
thanks to Youtube & someone's creative effort, you can literally "see" it, in a video I show every year to my Intro students. Enjoy.
