[MOJO DAVOS THREAD] Here’s some things I found while smartphone-filming at the #Davos summit. The BBC team took my DSLR kit out too, but I never needed to use it. #wef20 #mojo #videojournalism
[2/] I don’t go to many big international media events like this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people filming live and recorded pieces on their phones - a common sight, maybe 30%?
[3/] One clear benefit was that I was allowed to film without an official chaperone because I was using my phone - a chaperone takes time to organise
[4/] My colleagues working as producers for our TV output used their phones to get key shots, many of which ended up on network bulletins. Here’s a shot I got of Trump on my phone
[5/] I was simultaneously recording with an Insta 360 camera on a selfie stick, which I was holding aloft with my right hand - here is the shot from that
[6] I had a stressful time just before this key moment when the Insta went into 'standby' mode - I had to take the battery out to restart it
[7] I met this Indian crew filming #mojo. They said they could do it in Davos where the WiFi and mobile networks were very good, but at home the 4G wasn’t reliable enough
[8] Here’s the kind of kit my newsgathering colleagues need to carry around the conference - the tripod is the heaviest thing of course
[9/] In general I found it perfectly fine to film with my phone. In low light there could be a bit of an issue with grainy shots keeping in. And I also suffered some lens flare bbc.co.uk/news/av/busine….
[10/] In the noisy conference hall I tended to use this lapel mic set up (Sony Electret ECM-77B), which worked very well (though normally I prefer to just use a gun mic 🎤, less formal and faster)
[11] Fir example sound on this is good though background was very noisy bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
[12] Finally I tried filming one conference floor interview with just my pocket gimbal (no phone attached) as this seemed so convenient - but I had to reshoot it as the focus was soft on the interviewee - I’m just using that for showing off big locations now I think
[13] Other kit is available, here is what I used on this trip: @iographer rig to hold phone, @FiLMiCPro app for filming (in Log Mode), @rodemics iXLR adaptor, @AudioTechnicaUK ATM condenser mic (and Sony mentioned above), @DJIGlobal pocket gimbal, @insta360 camera on selfie stick
[14] ... I filmed on my @Apple iPhone 8 Plus and edited on #FCPX on my MacBook
[15] Another technique that worked well for me as a solo digital journalist was filming this interview with the @insta360 camera on a tripod (sound recorded separately as if for radio, then synced in edit) bbc.co.uk/news/business-…
