I argue (in "C,A") that the key global historical role of communism was the transformation of (some) colonized & "backward" societies into (i) "modern" and (ii) independent capitalist nations.
In that interpretation, communism created autochthonous national capitalisms, and its role was similar to the role played by the bourgeoisie in the more developed West.
Another implication of that point of view is centrality of China. The Russian revolution is seen merely as the "enabler" of transmission of Marxism to the Third World. Lenin's decision to conflate workers' movements with anti-imperialism was thus of primary importance.

Göran Therborn, one of the foremost Swedish sociologists and a Left activist (and a friend) has just published an excellent article in "The New Left Review", entitled "Twilight of Swedish Social Democracy". Here are the main facts from the article (not the main theses).
Swedish stock market capitalization went from 12% of GDP in 1980 to 128% in 2012 (higher capitalization than in the US).
Wealth & inheritance tax=0
Poorest 30% of Swedes have 0 or negative net wealth.
Life expectancy gap btw highly educated & low educated is 6y (+2y since 2000)
One Swedish city accepted more Iraqi refugees than the entire US
19% of Swedish residents are foreign-born; 11% from Asia and Africa
Foreign-born men employment rate (78%) higher than the EU rate for natives
Swedish Democrats (SD) poll relatively well in university towns

We should at least learn something from history so that we do not repeat it all the time.
1. Privatization in EE/FSU turned out to be much less important for growth that was originally believed. The speed of privatization was even less important.
2. No country became communist again because it did not privatize fast (the typical 1990s Washington Consensus and Clinton scare).
3. Countries that de-emphasized privatization & focused on macro stability and de novo private sector did much better (POL, SVN, HUN, SVK).
4. Counties that did the worst were those who *sold* (for next to nothing) their assets to the politically connected. These assets were wasted. Thus wealth inequality became huge and growth did not take place.

Today is the 22nd and final day of the Horizon trial, second trial of the Bates v Post Office group litigation at the High Court. Anthony de Garr Robinson QC (left) for the Post Office arriving this morning. He will be making the PO's closing submissions for five hours today.

121% for the top 10%
205% for the top 1%
636% for the top .001%

Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
