Hi #MedTwitter!!! I was excited to be involved w/ the #SHEASpring2021 pre-conference workshop that included an eval of the professional use of #twitter. Here are my notes from the session, sharing in case useful; my focus is on providing helpful tips to new(er) users (🧵):
✅ Always be mindful of your reason for using #twitter; keep use +, professional, consider focusing on only a few topical areas important to you. Consider limiting use to only a few times/day and limit total time spent in app (can go down a 🐇 hole)
At conferences (like #SHEASpring2021):

✅ Connecting w/ others during conferences HUGELY valuable & a good way to grow your network
✅ Engage w/ others; don’t just put out content, respond to others’ posts (great way to build network). Don’t forget to use the conference #!

1/30 In two forthcoming pieces, I examine #Japan's response to the #COVID19 #coronavirus #pandemic. I'll summarize the main non-theoretical points here (long thread alert!).
2/30 #Japan’s figures have always looked good compared to many other countries, which initially led to suspicion that the ‘real’ numbers of #COVID19 #coronavirus infections & death were being played down.
3/30 #Tokyo Metropolitan Government at least has now released full #COVID19 figures, including general death rates, seeming to put this argument to rest (but these figures are also now being challenged).…

Q: Is #lockdown and all this #InfectionPrevention bad for my immune system? Don’t we need to be exposed to enough colds and bugs to keep our immune systems strong?

A: Great question! This is a tricky concept for sure. Our answer in this thread
You might have heard of the “hygiene” hypotheses, which suggests that immune-related disorders like allergy and asthma are more common today because of decreased exposure to everyday microbes in our sanitized environment.
The key point of this hypothesis is “early exposure to a diverse range of “friendly” microbes—not infectious pathogens—is necessary to train the human immune system to react appropriately to stimuli.”

Took me a while, but in response to @AmyPearsonMD tweet of my talk last week @uihealthcare, a thread on ⬆️FiO2 and #SSI.

@scruff888 @DrMikeAziz @MPOGASPIRE @APSForg @woundheal #infectionprevention 1/15
Whether intraoperative high inspired oxygen is beneficial is not a settled question.* This thread explains why I routinely use it unless there is a contraindication.

*The evidence that it is NOT harmful is overwhelming.
Impetus to investigate high-inspired O2 grew out of in vitro, animal, human volunteer, & patient studies (1960s-90s): wound hypoxia associated with⬆️#SSI & peripheral vasoconstriction resulting from SNS activation is common source of wound hypoxia.

Let's remove barriers so that #PharmacyTechnicians in the UK can be trained to vaccinate, and support attainment of community immunity

Now's the time to produce a training programme & PSDs to support the delivery of this year's flu prevention plan

#vaccines #InfectionPrevention
We need to adopt QI methodology to address this #publichealth concern

The drivers are clear - this is about ⬆️ #patientsafety via #prevention

It should not be about inter-professional competition; there is enough work for everyone
It's important to #vaccinate as many people as possible to protect those who're vulnerable

Although UK flu activity levels were not high last year, impact on 2°care was high due to hospitlisation & ICU admissions

This year looks set to ⬆️ so let's be innovative w/ healthcare WF
