As our flags are folded away, along with our influence, credibility & the open horizons of our young generation, our future becomes the vision Leave’s leaders still today have not articulated.
Platitudes are no substitute for the lack of real benefits.
Trade deals we already had, borders we could already cross. Immigration we have always needed. Openness we pledge to keep.
It didn’t need to be this way. But now it is.
But mostly a failure of transparency and accountability have lain at the heart of this project, underpinned by increasingly open xenophobia and intolerance.
It didn’t have to be this way.
The journey from here must lie on the conscience & accountability of Leave’s Leaders.
For those of us who didn’t want this, we have to find the building bricks to construct a more open, inclusive society. It’s no easy path.
You are too many to list.
Collectively, you are a reason for hope.
They will include the years in which a right-wing press linked arms with politicians to blame foreigners for everything.
Now, those who lead Leave govern. The consequences are theirs.
Each step we take from here will be an attempt to approximate what we had with you, at great cost, & toxic division.
I hope we will be back.
