@LondonBreed Here's SCMP with more context on fecal/oral transmission vectors. SF is essentially an immunocompromised city already, it's not a great idea to take risks.

New preprint with authors from Chinese CDC estimates ~3.06% overall case fatality rate from 4000+ patients.

Estimates an R0 of 3.77, which is fairly high.

Also states that ~23% of patients had severe cases. Many of those are at risk for hospitalization.

I didn’t see the exact diagnostic criteria for a severe case in their writeup. They also noted that there may be many more unreported mild cases.

Would be good to match the precise diagnostic criteria vs other pprs to ensure “severe” refers to same thing.
The death rate doesn’t need to be as high as SARS to be a serious problem. The big issue is the contagiousness.

If it spreads to 30M people then “only” a 3% death rate could mean 1M deaths.

We need to accelerate on the vaccine, every day and week counts.

With Singapore shooting for a vaccine in 4 months and China’s remdesivir clinical trial underway in just 6 days after the NEJM paper, it’s clear that the do-or-die nature of this virus is already accelerating Asia’s clearance process for biomedicine.

Note that the cost of months of unnecessary delay in a pandemic is exponential.

If r is the monthly growth rate, the difference between 4 and 12 months is the difference between r^4 vs r^12.

So if Singapore can reduce the total time to vaccine, could be 1000X better!

Hands-free menus being rolled out on flights.
This menu is obviously improvised today, but the virus will catalyze a hygiene 2.0 movement across Asia at a minimum.

Every affordance touched by multiple people (menus, doorknobs, elevators, faucets) will get rethought with gesture & voice.

The spread of #2019nCoV (≥14,000 new cases in ~3 weeks) is much faster than when SARS and MERS emerged.

SARS was vanquished in 2003 after spreading for 9 months with only 8,098 confirmed cases. MERS has been circulating since 2012, with only ~2,500 known cases.
